When purchasing outdoor clothing, gear, or electronics, you may come across the labels "Waterproof" and "Water Resistant." Manufacturers rarely explain the differences between these terms, and many people mistakenly treat them as synonyms. Meanwhile, they represent completely different levels of protection against water. Read this guide to find out what each means in practice, and familiarize yourself with examples of such products and a table of waterproof ratings.
Difference between Waterproof and Water Resistant—explanation of parameters
The terms "Waterproof" and "Water Resistant" are often used interchangeably, but in practice, they refer to different levels of water protection. "Waterproof" means complete watertightness under certain conditions, while "Water Resistant" indicates limited moisture resistance. In the rest of the guide, we explain in detail what these terms mean and in which situations different products perform well.
What does Waterproof mean?
Waterproof is the highest level of protection against water. A product (e.g., a watch) with this label has a sealed barrier through which water cannot penetrate, even under pressure (e.g., when submerged). However, it should be noted that the waterproofness of products, especially electronic ones, has its limits. Manufacturers usually specify the maximum depth of immersion or the pressure under which the equipment can be used. This information should be included in the user manuals.
Example: the watch Casio G-Shock Master of G Land Rangeman GPR-H1000-1ER is waterproof at the level of 20 bars, which means it can be safely submerged to a depth of 200 meters. Exceeding this depth and pressure increase may cause damage to the watch, as water may penetrate inside and damage the mechanism and electronics.
In the case of outdoor clothing, the Waterproof standard works similarly to electronic devices, but instead of pressure in bars, a parameter in millimeters of water column is used. It specifies a certain water pressure on the material (hydrostatic pressure) and how much water the material can withstand before it starts to leak. For example, a parameter of 10000 mm means that the material can withstand water pressure equivalent to a 10-meter-high water column before it begins to allow water through. In real use conditions, the water pressure is greater than just falling rain.
Examples:
- Light rain – little pressure
- Sitting on a wet surface - large, localized pressure
- Wind + rain – the phenomenon of “driving” water into the material occurs
In the case of waterproof clothing, not only the fabric itself is important, but also the entire construction of the garment. All seams should be carefully secured with special tape (sealed), and zippers should be covered or made using splash-proof technology. Without such additional protections, water can penetrate through the holes in the seams or zippers, even if the material itself remains dry.
Example: the trousers Mil-Tec Softshell Assault Waterproof are waterproof at the level of 5000 mm of water column. This is sufficient protection against light and moderate rain during outdoor activities, although in heavy downpours or prolonged contact with water, the material may start to let moisture through.
Waterproof clothing ratings table
Below is a compilation of the most popular waterproof parameters used in outdoor clothing. The table will help you quickly assess whether a product will handle the conditions you are heading into.
| Parameter (mm H2 O) | Protection level | What does it mean in practice? | Example application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 – 1 000 | Minimal | The product provides protection against light splashes or drizzle. | Light everyday jackets, thin windbreakers. |
| 3 000 | Basic | The product will withstand brief, light rain but will get soaked with heavy rain or pressure (e.g. backpack). | Everyday jackets for city use or short trips. |
| 5 000 | Medium | Outdoor standard. The product will withstand moderate rain and snow. | Trekking in low mountains, skiing (under good conditions), everyday technical clothing. |
| 10 000 | High | Solid protection against heavy rain. The material withstands higher pressure (e.g. when sitting on wet ground). | All-day excursions in rainy weather, winter sports. |
| 20 000 | Very high | Full watertightness (standard e.g. for Gore-Tex). The material does not get soaked even during extreme downpours and strong water pressure. | Mountain climbing, sailing, high mountain expeditions in extremely difficult conditions. |
What does Water Resistant mean?
The term Water Resistant means that the product is moisture-resistant, but not completely waterproof. Such a product can withstand accidental splashes, light rain, or contact with a damp environment but is not suitable for immersion in water or prolonged contact with wet surfaces. For example, a watch labeled Water Resistant 3 ATM can withstand splashes, hand washing, or light rain, but it cannot be used for swimming or diving as water may penetrate inside and damage the mechanism.
In the case of clothing, Water Resistant means that the material has been coated with a special hydrophobic layer, such as DWR. The coating prevents water droplets from penetrating the fabric; instead, they bead and roll off the surface. This way, clothes protect against light rain or drizzle but do not provide full waterproofness during heavy rains, as water may gradually seep in, especially with prolonged contact with moisture.
Examples of outdoor products with labels: Water Resistant and Waterproof
It's worth pointing out what example product groups might be labeled waterproof or water-resistant. Let's take a closer look at them.
Water Resistant
- Softshell and training jackets – protect against light rain and drizzle, provide good ventilation. Example: Helikon-Tex Blizzard StormStretch Jacket
- Light outdoor trousers – resistant to short-term moisture contact. Example: Helikon-Tex Softshell Blizzard StormStretch Trousers
- Headwear, caps, hats – resistant to light rain, provide comfort in a humid environment. Example: Pentagon Waterproof Water Resistant Hat
Waterproof
- Jackets and trousers with Gore-Tex or similar membranes – provide full protection against rain and prolonged water contact. Example: Pentagon Artaxes Jacket
- Watches and outdoor electronic devices – resistant to flooding and immersion according to the manufacturer's parameters. Example: Casio G-Shock Octagon Watch
- Torches – waterproof, resistant to contact with water in demanding conditions. Example: Olight Perun 3 Mini Cool White Black Headlamp with Band
