Cold Steel Damascus Long Sax Sword

A single-edged, long knife inspired by 10th–11th-century artifacts from the British Isles found at the Battersea and Sittingbourne archaeological sites. The name “seax” (also spelled “sax”) means “knife” in Old English. This type of weapon was in use from the Migration Period among Germanic tribes until the end of the 11th century, particularly in southern England.

Blade with a broken-back profile made from pattern-welded Damascus

The single-edged blade, with a profile described by archaeologists as broken-back (resembling the modern Clip-Point profile), was crafted from pattern-welded damascus, composed of two types of carbon steel: soft and hard. A blade of this type is characterized by high impact resistance and edge retention, which enhances the weapon’s practical value. A ricasso (blunt tang) is located above the cross guard. The surface of the blade, which is 438 mm long and 7 mm thick, was finished by acid etching, revealing the characteristic damascene pattern. The entire blade finishing process was completed with polishing and sharpening.

Sword mount handle, rosewood grip, steel pommel, saddle-shaped cross guard

The 165 mm long hilt features a rosewood grip that tapers toward the center. A short, saddle-shaped cross guard—typical of early medieval swords and combat knives—prevents the hand from sliding down onto the blade. The three-part steel pommel, classified as Type Z according to Petersen’s typology, serves as a counterweight to the blade. All three elements of the hilt feature decorative steel and brass spacers. Furthermore, a chain made of twisted wire has been soldered between the pommel segments.

Leather scabbard with brass fittings, two rings for threading a strap

The set includes a scabbard made of genuine leather with brass, richly decorated fittings. Two riveted brass rings allow you to thread a strap through them and attach the knife to your belt.

Damascus steel is a composite material created by combining multiple layers of different types of steel with varying properties. Repeated forging and welding creates a structure with high strength, flexibility, and hardness. Layers with a higher carbon content are responsible for the sharpness and durability of the edges, while nickel alloy steel increases corrosion resistance and provides a contrasting pattern. After etching the surface, a unique, wavy pattern characteristic of each piece is revealed. Thanks to its combination of functional and aesthetic properties, Damascus steel is used in premium knives, bladed weapons, and collector's knives.
