Today's and earlier Katany by Cold Steel are worlds apart. I bought a sword for over 3,000 but it should cost at most half that price. The blade itself is flawless... the rest is a disaster. The scabbard is hellishly soft and even became rotten. The handle is cracked, which you can feel through the wrapping, and the looseness is impossible to miss. Just a disaster. So, if you're after the blade – it's okay, but you'll need to properly mount it yourself. It's sad that the company is now running only on the reputation it once built up. And the competition isn't sleeping... unfortunately...

The hilt is constructed from wood and wrapped in genuine Same (ray skin - Raja) with a traditional silk overlay. Decorative elements such as the Tsuba (guard), Kashira (pommel cap), and Menuki (ornamental accents beneath the wrap) are meticulously crafted from metal castings.

My word. Beautifully crafted and sharp as hell, as I found out when I nearly sliced my fingers while wiping off the factory protective grease. I didn't expect that around the middle, the blade is sharpened on both sides like a dagger.
