Cold Steel Master Tanto Knife VG-10 San Mai

Equipped with a Full Tang construction, the knife measures a total of 292 mm in length. Featuring a 152 mm long blade with a Tanto point, it is crafted from VG-10 San Mai laminated steel, delivering a balance of high hardness and durability. The blade sports a semi-matte finish. The handle is constructed from non-slip Kray-Ex material, providing a firm and reliable grip. A Secure-Ex sheath is included, designed for versatile, multi-positional carry.

San Mai laminate with VG-10 steel core

Constructed using San Mai laminate, the knife features a hard VG-10 steel core that has been tempered to a hardness level of 59-61 HRC and is sandwiched between two layers of softer stainless steel. Thanks to this triple-layer structure, users benefit from excellent edge retention as well as superior resistance to cracking and chipping. The outer stainless layers enhance blade flexibility and durability against lateral stress. The chosen laminate also offers exceptional corrosion resistance, ensuring the knife performs reliably in demanding environments.

Tanto blade with satin finish

Engineered with a Tanto blade profile, this knife features a blade length of 152 mm and a thickness of 5 mm, offering a robust tip capable of withstanding demanding tasks while maintaining the edge required for detailed work. The plain-edge blade is shaped with a flat grind and completed with a satin finish, delivering a semi-matte appearance while enhancing resistance to scratches.

Non-slip Kray-Ex handle

Constructed from durable Kray-Ex, the handle features a non-slip surface, delivering a reliable grip even when hands are wet or dirty. A hole at the handle’s end allows for easy attachment of a cord or paracord. The single-sided cross guard serves as protection, effectively preventing fingers from sliding onto the blade.

Secure-Ex system sheath, multi-positional mounting capability

The knife comes equipped with a sheath designed in the Secure-Ex system, crafted from a lightweight, robust, and weather-resistant material. Secure retention of the knife is ensured by a precision-molded inlet and a snap-secured belt loop, minimizing the risk of accidental drops. Through the belt loop, the sheath can be attached to a belt, while multiple holes and grommets enable versatile attachment options to belts or additional gear.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
VG-10 feature
VG-10
VG-10 is a premium Japanese stainless steel developed by Takefu Special Steel specifically for knife production. It features a unique combination of high corrosion resistance and excellent cutting properties. Its carbon content (0.95-1.05%) ensures high hardness, while chromium (14.5-15.5%) guarantees stainlessness and increases abrasion resistance. This steel also contains vanadium (0.2-0.3%), molybdenum (0.9-1.2%), cobalt (1.3-1.5%), silicon (0.6%), and manganese (0.5%), which improve its strength, hardenability, and resistance to microdamage. After proper heat treatment, VG-10 achieves a hardness in the range of 59-61 HRC, which provides an optimal balance between long-lasting sharpness and ease of sharpening. The steel is slightly less resistant to abrasion than ATS-34/154CM steel, but offers better impact resistance, making it more resistant to cracks and chipping. Although it has high corrosion resistance, it can develop surface rust in unfavorable conditions. VG-10 is mainly used in the production of mid-range and high-end knives.
San Mai feature
San Mai
San Mai (ja. "three layers") is a three-layer steel laminate developed by Cold Steel, combining a hard, high-carbon core with outer layers of stainless steel that offer high flexibility and corrosion resistance. The outer layers protect the core from damage, increase the blade's impact resistance, and facilitate maintenance. Depending on the generation, Cold Steel has used different core steels: VG-1 (San Mai III), containing 0.95-1.05% carbon and 13-15% chromium, characterized by good edge retention and rust resistance, and VG-10, enriched with molybdenum (0.9-1.2%) and vanadium (0.2-0.3%), which improves hardness, abrasion resistance, and edge retention. After proper heat treatment, the core reaches a hardness of 59-61 HRC. Products with a VG-1 San Mai core are manufactured in Japan in limited editions and are used in Cold Steel's most exclusive collector's fixed knives. VG-10 San Mai is produced in small series and is used exclusively in top-of-the-line collector's knives. San Mai is a registered trademark of Cold Steel.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.
