A lightweight fixed-blade knife featuring a Full Tang design, part of the Mini Tac line, engineered for both everyday carry (EDC) and outdoor applications. Equipped with a Tanto-style blade crafted from stainless AUS-8A steel, renowned for its superior resistance to corrosion. The handle sports black scales made from Griv-Ex material with a textured, non-slip surface to ensure a firm and comfortable grip. Included is a sheath utilizing the Secure-Ex system as well as a ball chain, allowing convenient neck carry of the knife.

Japanese stainless steel AUS-8A

Forged from Japanese stainless steel AUS-8A, the blade delivers an optimal blend of corrosion resistance and edge retention. Advanced heat treatment enables achievement of a hardness level of 58-60 HRC.

Tanto profile blade with a serrated edge

Equipped with a Tanto profile, the blade measures 95 mm in length and has a thickness of 2.5 mm. A serrated edge combined with a flat grind ensures outstanding cutting efficiency, particularly when working with fibrous materials, while also enhancing blade durability. Finished using the Bead Blast method, the blade boasts a matte surface that minimizes glare and offers improved resistance to scratches.

Full Tang construction, ergonomic grip with Griv-Ex

Built with Full Tang construction, the knife’s handle features a steel tang that extends the full length for enhanced durability and structural integrity. Attached to the tang are Griv-Ex grip scales, engineered from tough, glass-reinforced composite material. The non-slip grip, designed with pronounced finger grooves and jimping on the spine of the blade, ensures exceptional handling and control, even in wet or dirty conditions. For added safety, a small steel cross guard is included to prevent the hand from sliding onto the blade.

Secure-Ex system sheath, neck carry chain

The Secure-Ex system sheath accompanying the knife is crafted from a durable, lightweight, and weather-resistant material. Multiple holes in the sheath allow for easy cord threading. Secure-Ex

Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.

AUS-8A

AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.

Bead Blast

Bead Blast is a blade finishing technique that involves treating steel with a stream of fine ceramic or glass beads under high pressure. It gives the surface a uniform matte, satin-gray appearance without any light reflections. The surface obtained in the sandblasting process is smooth and aesthetic, but due to micro-pores, it may be slightly more susceptible to wear and corrosion if the blade is not properly protected. Nevertheless, Bead Blast is valued for its simplicity, discretion, and masking properties, which is why it is used in EDC, outdoor, and military knives.

Griv-Ex

Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

I bought this small but razor-sharp knife as a second one, because it's worth having it with you so you don't have to remember to leave it in a different set of clothes (I personally don't usually hang it around my neck). It fits perfectly and safely in the hand and is very comfortable in various situations, even those not entirely foreseen, as long as a longer tool is not needed.
