Cold Steel Norman Sword

Razor-sharp, double-edged single-handed sword modeled after archaeological discoveries from early medieval Europe, dating back to the 10th-11th centuries. The design reflects armaments used by the Norman invaders who, in 1066, traversed the English Channel and initiated their conquest of the British Isles, culminating in the Battle of Hastings. The weapon’s characteristics align with type Y in Jan Petersen's classification and type IX in Ewart Oakeshott's typology. Sturdy blade construction combined with an ergonomic hilt enables efficient cutting practice.

Double-edged, sharp blade made of 1060 carbon steel, double-sided fuller

Forged from 1060 carbon steel, the sharp, double-edged blade measures 762 mm in length and 6.3 mm in thickness, delivering excellent impact resistance. A dual-sided fuller extends down the center, enhancing structural integrity and lowering blade weight. The blade surface features a polished finish.

Handle wrapped in leather, slightly curved cross guard, type Y pommel according to Jan Petersen

Featuring a handle measuring 184 mm in length, this piece comes with a robust steel cross guard that curves slightly, providing effective hand protection for the wielder and ensuring hands stay clear of the blade. The distinctive form of the guard is typical of swords from the High Middle Ages, marking an important phase in the progression toward later knightly armaments. The grip is bound in black natural leather for enhanced grip and comfort. The pommel, crafted in type Y according to Jan Petersen, balances the blade as a sturdy counterweight.

Scabbard with a full set of fittings

Included is a wooden scabbard wrapped in black leather with a full set of fittings. Both the upper fitting and the lower fitting (chape) are made of steel.

Warning!

Featuring a sharp blade, the sword is unsuitable for use in sparring or combat training!

1060
1060 is a medium-carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.55-0.65%, characterized by good cutting properties and abrasion resistance. Thanks to its carbon content, this steel achieves a hardness of 55-58 HRC after proper hardening, which ensures the durability of the cutting edge. 1060 is easy to machine, and its hardness makes it a popular choice for the production of knives, machetes, and tools designed for heavier work. Due to the lack of alloying additives, this steel is not corrosion resistant, which requires proper maintenance and care to protect against rust. 1060 steel is widely used in the production of work tools and knives of medium hardness.
