Cold Steel OSS AUS-8A Fixed Blade Knife

Featuring a Full Tang design, this knife offers a double-edged blade crafted with a Bowie profile from AUS-8A stainless steel, striking a balance between edge retention, corrosion resistance, and sharpening ease. The handle is constructed from Kray-Ex material, delivering a secure grip thanks to its non-slip texture. Accompanied by a Secure-Ex sheath, the knife allows for versatile mounting options on belts or gear.

AUS-8A stainless steel

Forged from Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel, the blade delivers a well-balanced combination of properties. Outstanding corrosion resistance, impact toughness, and ease of sharpening ensure swift edge maintenance. Optimal heat treatment brings the steel to a typical 58–60 HRC hardness, offering reliable cutting efficiency and long-lasting durability.

Blade with Bowie profile

Featuring a classic Bowie blade profile, this model measures 210 mm in length and 4.7 mm in thickness. The blade offers a satin finish on both sides, creating a consistent, straight grain effect after manufacture and helping to minimize reflections on the blade’s surface.

Kray-Ex handle

Manufactured through injection molding, the handle forms a single, unified piece of Kray-Ex material. A forward cross guard shields the hand and minimizes the chance of fingers sliding toward the blade. An extra, more compact sub-hilt delivers an additional point of contact, supporting stable hand placement throughout use. This robust design offers improved strength and superior knife control. Featuring a non-slip texture, the handle ensures a secure hold even under adverse weather conditions. A lanyard hole is positioned at the base of the handle for added utility.

Secure-Ex sheath

Supplied with a Secure-Ex sheath, the knife offers a snap loop for quick attachment or removal from a belt, eliminating the need to unbuckle. Multiple holes along the sheath’s perimeter enable multi-position attachment to different types of gear.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
AUS-8A feature
AUS-8A
AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

An excellent combat knife for the collection. Came sharpened. Beautifully made. A classic. I recommend it.

A big nice blade, with a good sheath, makes a strong impression, I use it as a decoration.

This is my second Cold Steel knife. The knife is solid. Very sharp on both sides. Secure grip. The tip of the blade is so 'pointy' that it could break when piercing hard material. The knife is hard to remove from the sheath. Despite everything, it's hard to find a better combat knife. Rating: -5.

A real piece of knife, the double-edged blade is perfectly sharpened so you have to be careful, solid construction. The large grip will not be a problem even for large hands. Good sheath, the knife fits in with quite a bit of resistance and there is a bit of a problem when removing it, but it won't fall out when carried tip-down. The only thing that spoils it a bit is the word CHINA next to the Cold Steel logo, but it's just a label. Ordered with in-store pickup in Łódź without any problems, so I recommend both the "knife" and the store.
