Cold Steel Oyabun Folding Knife 4116SS

The EDC (Every Day Carry) folding knife features a Tanto blade crafted from 4116SS stainless steel, known for its excellent resistance to corrosion. Designed with an ergonomic black handle constructed from a blend of Griv-Ex and Kray-Ex materials, the knife provides superior durability and a secure grip. The multi-award-winning knifemaker Andrew Demko developed this model in collaboration with Cold Steel.

4116SS stainless steel

Forged from 4116SS stainless steel, the knife blade offers reliable hardness and excellent edge durability. Owing to its high chromium content, this steel delivers outstanding resistance to both corrosion and oxidation. The blade achieves a hardness of 57 HRC, having benefited from advanced heat treatment and sub-zero hardening. Such processing ensures superior edge retention.

Tanto profile blade with satin finish

Equipped with an 89 mm long and 3.8 mm thick Tanto blade, the knife delivers durability and strength. A high flat grind enhances its cutting efficiency, enabling outstanding slicing performance while maintaining a robust, break-resistant profile. The blade’s satin finish imparts a semi-matte sheen, combining visual appeal with tactical functionality.

Composite scales

Black handle scales are crafted from injection-molded glass-filled nylon composite Griv-Ex, finished with a layer of Kray-Ex polymer, renowned for its superior adhesion and anti-slip properties, delivering a secure hold even in wet conditions. Steel torx screws firmly secure the scales to the handle.

A spring steel clip enhances ease of everyday carry. A lanyard hole is positioned at the end of the handle for added safety.

dual locking system spring leaf lock and liner lock

Blade deployment is achieved via a flipper, which functions as a cross guard to keep your hand from slipping forward onto the blade. In the open position, the blade is secured by a Liner Lock mechanism. Worth highlighting is Cold Steel’s patented, supplementary sliding lock, the Leaf Spring Lock, integrated into the handle. After the blade is fully opened, the spring reinforces the liner, providing additional protection against accidental closure, even under heavy impact.

Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
4116SS feature
4116SS
4116SS steel is the commercial name for high-quality 1.4116 stainless steel from the German DIN group, widely used in kitchen knives and medical tools. The carbon content (0.45-0.55%) ensures good hardness and edge durability, while chromium (14-15%) guarantees high resistance to corrosion and oxidation. The steel also contains molybdenum (up to 0.6%), vanadium (up to 0.2%), manganese (up to 1%), silicon (up to 1%), and a small amount of nickel (up to 1%). It achieves a hardness of 55-57 HRC after appropriate heat treatment, which allows for knives with good cutting properties, easy maintenance, and corrosion resistance.
Spring Leaf Lock feature
Spring Leaf Lock
Spring Leaf Lock is a folding knife lock by Cold Steel, combining a classic Liner Lock with an additional spring bar. When the blade is opened, the spring secures the liner, preventing accidental folding even during strong shocks. To close the knife, first move the safety guard aside and then release the lock. This mechanism increases safety and reliability during use.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

A very nice knife, made in the style of a katana. I recommend it.

A well-thought-out tanto design. A thick blade for such a small folder, but it cuts excellently.

    A lightweight, nicely built knife.

I like tanto-type blades, and I also liked the design. The knife is light despite the 4 mm blade. It fits well in the hand and opens smoothly.

Probably the cheapest folding tanto available from Cold Steel. Sharp, handy, fits just right in your pocket. However, after the first couple of gentle openings, the Liner Lock was not moving well and the Leaf Spring lock was not sliding all the way. It turned out you simply need to open it with a stronger flick, then the liner catches perfectly in the middle of the blade and the sliding lock also moves all the way. It's always like this, so you have to flick it a bit when opening and everything will be fine...
