Sako is a Finnish rifle and hunting ammunition manufacturer founded in 1921 in Riihimäki, with over a century of experience producing top-tier firearms. The brand traces its roots to the armory workshop of the Finnish Civil Guard, established to repair weapons in the early years of Finnish independence. Over the decades, Sako grew into one of the most respected manufacturers of hunting and sniper rifles in the world, combining Finnish craftsmanship with innovative engineering and a level of precision that has set industry benchmarks. Sako stands as the only firearms manufacturer in history to produce both rifles and the ammunition loaded for them in-house — enabling rifle-cartridge system optimization that no other maker can match.
History — from a Civil Guard workshop to a global brand
Sako (short for Suojeluskuntain Ase- ja Konepaja Oy — the Civil Guard Arms and Machine Workshop) became financially independent in 1921 and relocated to Riihimäki in 1927. By the late 1920s the company had begun producing pistol ammunition, followed by rifle ammunition in the early 1930s. During World War II, Sako played a critical role in supplying the Finnish armed forces, manufacturing rifles and producing large volumes of ammunition for Finnish submachine guns.
After the war, under the leadership of Colonel Elias Hydén, the company returned to civilian hunting production. The L46 carbine of 1946 was its first export success — reaching Nordic and Western European markets and soon making its way to the United States, which by 1952 had become Sako's largest export market. That marked the beginning of the Finnish brand's global rise. In 1983, Sako acquired the Tikka brand, and in 2000 the entire company came under the ownership of the Italian Beretta Holding group.
Flagship rifle series
Sako's most important rifle series include: the Model 85 — the flagship hunting rifle available in over 1,000 configurations spanning barrel lengths, stocks, calibers, and finishes. The TRG line is a series of precision sniper rifles — the TRG-22 and TRG-42 — in service with special forces across multiple NATO nations and widely regarded as one of the most accurate sniper platforms in the world. The S20 is a modern modular rifle, flexible and fully customizable to suit a wide range of hunters and sport shooters. The Carbonlight and Finnlight series are prized for their exceptionally low weight without compromising the precision Sako is known for. Under the Tikka brand, the T3x and T1x offer accessible price points aimed at the broader hunting market.
What sets Sako apart
Sako is the only rifle manufacturer in the world that also produces its own ammunition. This means every Sako cartridge is designed and tested in direct relation to the chamber dimensions of Sako rifles — the result is exceptional shot-to-shot consistency and accuracy that simply cannot be achieved by pairing firearms and ammunition from different manufacturers. Finnish attention to detail, generations of craftsmanship, and a national hunting and shooting culture — where these pursuits are part of the country's identity — run through every product the brand makes.
