Aviator watches are valued for their unique design and functionality, and there is a history associated with this. In the past, there was a clear need associated with watches for pilots, which would be characterized by reliability, very good readability, and at the same time also simplicity of use. It is considered that the first aviation watch was created when Alberto Santos-Dumont (aviation pioneer) in 1906 asked Luis Cartier to create a watch that met his needs. It could not be unreadable and problematic to use - reaching into his pocket every time to read the time was out of the question.

Thus was born the design of a wristwatch designed for pilots and navigators. Modern watches in terms of design often visually refer to aviation watches, and are colloquially referred to as "pilot" or "aviator". They have simple, contrasting dials, characterized by very good legibility. Large envelopes are also common in this type of watch, and the lack of unnecessary accessories is considered an advantage (they have a negative impact on legibility). Materials in the form of stainless steel and leather are used in them most often.

Today, pilots are supported by the solutions of modern technology, and watches are no longer used at least when navigating, but remnants of their historical uses, such as the large crown, are still a permanent feature of the so-called aviation watches. Their style, reliability and interesting history make them still very popular and have many supporters.
