Properly fitting gloves are not only a matter of aesthetics, but above all of comfort and safety. The main task of gloves is to protect our hands. Both gloves that are too tight and gloves that are too loose may not fulfil their purpose. So how do you choose the right size gloves?
From this guide you will learn:
- why it is important to choose the right size gloves,
- how to measure your hands to choose the right size gloves,
- what size gloves to choose based on the size chart.
Why is it important to pay attention to the correct glove size?
The correct size of gloves is of great importance. Among other things, it influences comfort, safety and protective performance. Below, we describe in more detail some of the reasons why the right glove size is so important:
Comfort
Fitted gloves will ensure that you are comfortable when wearing them. Gloves that are too small put pressure on your hands, causing discomfort and even pain. Conversely, gloves that are too big can slip off your hands, which is a nuisance and can be annoying.
Precision and dexterity
Gloves that fit the hand increase precision and dexterity when working with different tools. Gloves that are too large can make it difficult to grip and handle objects with confidence, while gloves that are too small can restrict hand movement. This is particularly important for mechanics or construction workers, for example.
Protection
The purpose of gloves is primarily to protect the wearer from cold, dirty hands and various harmful substances. If you choose gloves that are too large, the protection against these factors may be insufficient. For example, gloves that are too loose will not provide adequate protection against frost, as the cold can penetrate through gaps.
Another example would be ASG games, where gloves are often used to protect the hands. Gloves that are too loose or too tight can hinder the use of the replica, which can have a negative impact on shooting efficiency and comfort. Well-fitting gloves also have an important protective function during shooting events, as they protect the user's hands from incoming bullets.
Hygiene
Remember that the correct glove size also has an impact on hygiene. If you have gloves that are too tight, which hinders proper ventilation and airflow, your hands will sweat more.
Excessive sweating can increase the moisture inside the gloves, which creates favourable conditions for the growth of bacteria and fungi. This can lead to unpleasant odour, skin irritation and an increased risk of infection. This is relevant, for example, for people who cycle extensively.
Aesthetics
Gloves primarily have a protective function, but their appearance is also important. Gloves that are the right size look much better on the hands.
How do you measure your hand to choose the right gloves? Step by step
If you want to choose gloves that fit your hands, we advise you to avoid making a decision based solely on intuition. It is definitely better to measure your hands and check exactly what size gloves will be suitable even before you make your purchase. How do you measure your hand for gloves? The detailed method of measurement is generally specified by the manufacturer in the size chart included in the product description.
Below we explain step by step how to for example the hand can be measured for gloves.
1. You will need a tailor's tape measure, ribbon, possibly string and an inch or longer ruler to measure.
2. To measure the circumference of your hand, open it gently and position it slightly bent.
3. Then wrap your hand with a tailor's tape measure or ribbon. It is very important to place the tape measure above the base of your thumb. Measure the width from point A to point B, as in the attached graphic below.

4. Also measure the length of the middle finger. Start measuring from the base of the finger (bend at the palm) to the tip of the finger. Measure the length from point A to point B, as in the image below.

5. Ensure that the ribbon is wrapped quite loosely at the widest point of the hand and does not pinch it.
6. You can now read the circumference of your hand with a tailor's tape measure and this will allow you to find the right size of glove in the size chart.
The above method of measuring hands for gloves is only an example, and manufacturers usually include instructions in the description of the specific model.
