Victorinox Swiss Army Knives - history, models and non-obvious features

Victorinox Swiss Army Knives have stood for precision and reliability for over a century. Founded in 1884, the company gained an international reputation for producing high-quality military knives that became standard equipment for Swiss soldiers. Today, Victorinox, as a global brand, remains true to its tradition, and the characteristic red knives with a white cross are not only an inseparable companion for soldiers, but also a favorite tool of travelers and DIY enthusiasts around the world.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the history of the Victorinox Swiss Army Knives. We will also discuss popular models and their non-obvious functions. If you are curious about how the Victorinox brand has developed, wondering which Victorinox brand of Swiss Army Knives to choose and what you can use them for, you will find the answers to your questions in this article.

Victorinox Brand History - Quality and Reliability

The history of Victorinox begins in 1884 in a small Swiss village called Ibach. This is where Karl Elsener (later called Karl Elsener I) has his workshop, where he produces knives. A few years later, in 1891, Karl founded Swiss Knife Manufacturers Association (Association of Swiss Master Cutlers), which brings together around 30 knife manufacturers in Switzerland. In the same year, Elsener completed the first large order for the Swiss army. Six years later, the "Offiziersmesser" is patented - a military knife, today known under the names "Original Swiss Officer and Sports Knife" or "Original Swiss Army Knife".

The current name of the brand was finally formed in 1921, the year Karl's mother, Victoria, died. His son decided to honor her memory, hence the first part of the current name comes from her name. The complement is "inox" which is the name for the stainless steel used in knives (acier inoxydable).

In 1931, the world's first fully electric steel hardening plant is built in Ibach, ensuring the uniform quality of every knife produced under the Victorinox brand. The brand's knives become so popular that in 1945, the United States Army orders a large batch of products for its military stores, and the knives themselves are a souvenir for US soldiers returning home from Europe after World War II. In 1978, Victorinox Master Craftsman officer knives go to NASA. In 1989, the brand expands its product range to include watches, and ten years later to suitcases and bags.

After 2000, the brand continues to grow. In 2001, it introduces a clothing line to the US market and opens its first store in the Soho district of New York. Four years later, Victorinox acquires another renowned company with a long tradition — Wenger SA from Delemont. After another three years, a company store is established in London. In 2014, another Victorinox flagship store is opened, this time in Zurich.

In 2017, the 500,000,000th original Swiss army knife was produced. In 2022, it celebrated its 125th anniversary. To this day, the Victorinox brand cultivates tradition combined with innovation. The company is still managed by Karl Elsener, although not the first, but the fourth.

Victorinox Pocket Knives – Non-Obvious Features and Interesting Tools

Victorinox pocket knives are not only classic knives, but also versatile tools with surprising functions. From can openers, through screwdrivers, to scissors or tweezers - each pocket knife conceals unique solutions that can be invaluable in everyday situations. Discover the non-obvious functions and tools that make these pocket knives unique.

Corkscrew - a place to store extra tools

At first glance, it may seem that a corkscrew is just a corkscrew and there is no point in dwelling on it any longer. However, it takes up a lot of space in the pocket knife, so the manufacturer decided to give it new functions. We can screw many additional accessories into the corkscrew itself, which are equipped with a special thread made of plastic. An example of such a tool is e.g. small screwdriver. It can be used, for example, to tighten screws in electronic devices or glasses, as well as to clean weapons and manipulate small parts of mechanisms. They also we can install there something that we need. This is where 3D printers, which are becoming increasingly popular, can certainly prove helpful.

A saw that is also used for drilling and making fire

Another tool worth considering that has rather non-obvious functions is the saw. Usually, if we need to make a hole, the first tool we reach for will be a reamer that also has the functions of a spike and an awl. But what if we need a larger hole? First, we can use the reamer, and then use the Victorinox saw. Due to the fact that it does not have an even blade along its entire length, with its help, working slowly and systematically, we can widen our hole until we reach the maximum size that the saw allows us.

The second non-obvious function of the saw is the ability to strike fire with a flint. If we sharpen the back of the saw with, for example, a metal file, it will be sharp enough to, for example, scrape off birch bark and then serve as a flint blade. It is not recommended to use the main blade for striking fire, due to its faster wear. It is better to leave its sharpness and precision for more important tasks.

Victorinox pen with which you can construct a compass

What if you suddenly need a compass in the forest or on an expedition? Use Victorinox! If you have a Victorinox pen in the set, insert it into the hole of the corkscrew. Then use the small blade as a compass spike and mark a circle, e.g. on a piece of wood. Then all that remains is to cut the wood using a knife along the previously outlined shape and the circle is ready. If we decide to drill holes and add a groove to our freshly cut, round piece of wood, we can create a block.

Victorinox pocket knife as a measuring stick

Our Victorinox doesn't necessarily have to have a factory-made scale, but there's a way to do that. All you need to do is measure the size of the penknife itself or the size of a specific tool in the open position at home. This way, in a situation where you need to estimate a distance, instead of strictly by eye, you'll be able to get a more precise measurement.

Victorinox Hook - Not Just for Opening Packages

The main function of the hook in Victorinox pocket knives is the ability to open packages quickly and efficiently. In addition, you can use the hook to screw in an eyelet or L-shaped screw or, for example, to pull a shoelace through a hole in a shoe. The hook is also useful when camping, for example, to remove a hot canteen from a campfire without getting burned. You can also use it to quickly and efficiently twist a piece of wire.

Or maybe you are a fan of cycling? If so, you should be interested in the fact that you can tighten a spoke with the Victorinox hook. It fits like a glove!

Victorinox for Lumberjacks - How Else Can It Help?

The Swiss Army knife, apart from its traditional bushcraft and forestry applications, has another advantage that not everyone knows about. Namely, versions such as e.g. Fieldmaster are equipped with a saw, which, due to its size, is perfect for cleaning the guides of mechanical saws from the dirt that accumulates in them. Importantly, this action will not dull the saw itself, because the dirt is removed with its blunt, front part.

Victorinox for electricians - check out what it has to offer

The Victorinox pocket knife will also find use in electrician work. At the end of the main blade you will find a tool that allows you to cut the insulation of an electric wire. Then reach for the can opener, at the bottom of which there is a blunt notch that allows you to remove the previously cut insulation.

Victorinox as a rescue for the last cable tie

If your Victorinox comes with a toothpick, you can use it to retrieve a crimped cable tie. To do this, slide it under the loop of the cable tie and you're done!

Will a Victorinox pocket knife extract a nail?

Absolutely. Using the notch located on the bottle opener, we can pull out a driven nail. Of course, its size must correspond to the notch. Usually, it can be used to pull out most small nails. Interestingly, we can also bend the wire with the same tool and make a hook out of it, which we can use to grab other objects, for example.

Victorinox as a paint can opener

Not everyone knows that you can't use a Victorinox pocket knife just to open food cans. If you work as a painter, you've probably had to deal with cans that are hard to open, especially if there's a lot of dried paint on the lid. A bottle opener can also be used here. A quick movement and we can continue painting. Just remember that an opener is not a crowbar and if you use too much force, even Swiss steel can crack!

Victorinox with attachment - expand your tools

There are many multitools on the market that come with more screwdrivers than the classic Victorinox, but there is a way around that too. The bit attachment fits perfectly on the flat screwdriver found on the bottle opener. Thanks to this, we can have every screwdriver we need.

How to recognize an original Victorinox?

Due to the popularity of Victorinox pocket knives, it is common to come across counterfeit tools that are far from satisfactory in quality. It is worth knowing what to look for to ensure that your tool is a 100% Swiss army knife.

    • Logo and inscription

The first thing to look for is the brand logo. On genuine Victorinox pocket knives, you will find a logo in the shape of a shield with a cross in the middle on a red background. The logo is usually engraved on the casing of the pocket knife. Also check if the blade has the Victorinox inscription clearly engraved.
