Which flashlight to choose for your car? - A practical guide for drivers

A car flashlight is usually an overlooked, but often very necessary, piece of car equipment. Many drivers have certainly had to make an emergency stop while driving after dark at least once - whether to check for a fault under the hood or replace a damaged wheel. For this reason, it is always worth having a flashlight on hand that will provide enough light for every inspection and repair of the vehicle. In this article, you will learn why it is worth buying a flashlight for your car and what to look for when buying one.

Why is it worth getting a car flashlight?

Having a flashlight in your car is always a good idea. Sometimes it happens that during a night trip, the car breaks down and you have to pull over to the side of the road to inspect the vehicle. Of course, we usually carry a smartphone with a built-in flashlight, but this is not a very convenient way to illuminate the place of failure. In addition, phone flashlights often prove insufficient in such situations - they have very little power and a wide beam of light, and they are quite awkward to hold. A much better choice would be to buy, for example, a flashlight - a car headlamp, which can be worn on the head, leaving both hands free at your disposal.

What other situations would you find useful with a flashlight in your car? Here are some examples:

  • Vehicle interior lighting - If your car's interior lighting fails, the flashlight can be used as a temporary light source. It can also be useful if there is insufficient lighting inside the car, for example, and you need to find lost keys or a wallet that has fallen under the seat.
  • Calling for help in the event of an accident - The flashlight can be used to signal other drivers or emergency services that you need help.
  • Self-defense tool — a car flashlight can be useful, for example, when you are parked at night on the side of the road waiting for roadside assistance (e.g. a tow truck). If an attacker appears unexpectedly, the strong light from the flashlight can blind him, giving you valuable time to react, call for help or escape. There are also flashlights with stun gun, which is an additional element of self-defense.
  • Effective help in emergency situations — it is also worth mentioning the special ones stick type flashlights, which are designed to break windows. If you witness an accident and need to break a car window, a flashlight of this type can be very useful.

What to look for when buying a car flashlight?

It is definitely worth considering buying a car flashlight with a magnet. It can be attached, for example, to the open hood, which will be useful in the event of an inspection and engine repair. Both handheld flashlights and headlamps are very often equipped with magnets. However, it is better to choose a headlamp, because it can be comfortably worn on the head, which is useful, for example, when changing tires on the road at night. A 2-in-1 flashlight is also a good purchase, which can be used as a regular handheld flashlight, but has an attached headband, thanks to which it can be transformed into a headlamp.

It is also worth choosing a flashlight with an LED diode. This technology has successfully replaced traditional bulbs. LED diodes offer greater power, longer life and resistance to shock and vibration. When choosing a flashlight for your car, also pay attention to:

    • Light output - It's important to check how many lumens the flashlight has, because the higher the number of lumens, the brighter the light. For a car flashlight, it's worth choosing models between 200 lumens and 1000 lumens.
    • Power type - Some flashlights run on AAA batteries, while others use lithium-ion batteries. The best option is a flashlight that supports both rechargeable and traditional batteries.
    • Weather resistance - Remember that sometimes when you need to make repairs, it can rain or snow, so it's a good idea to have a flashlight with certified splash resistance.
    • Light modes - It's worth paying attention to the available light modes on your car flashlight. The highest power mode is suitable for illuminating longer distances. The lowest mode allows you to illuminate short distances without blinding with reflected light. The strobe mode can be used for self-defense.
    • Durable housing - when choosing, it is worth paying attention to the material from which the flashlight housing is made. Models made of aluminum or high-quality plastic are more resistant to mechanical damage and falls.
    • Adjusting the angle of light - thanks to this function, you can direct the light beam exactly where you need it most, e.g. on the engine or another specific part of the vehicle.
    • Adjusting the light beam - this is a function that allows you to change the width of the light beam. The beam can be narrow (focused) or wide (diffused), which affects how far and how widely the surroundings are illuminated. For example, a narrow beam will be useful when you need to illuminate hard-to-reach places, such as the inside of the engine compartment.
