Benchmade Griptilian CPM-S30V Folding Knife - Black Nylon Fiber Glass

Light and durable folder designed for everyday use (EDC), both during household tasks and outdoor activities. The blade is made from CPM S30V stainless steel, and the handle scales from fibreglass reinforced nylon.

CPM S30V stainless steel

The Sheepfoot profile blade is 87 mm long and 2.9 mm thick. It is made from satin-finished CPM S30V stainless steel with a hardness of 58-60 HRC, highly resistant to dulling. Jimping on the back of the blade (so-called jimping) provides a secure thumb rest during tool use.

thumb stud, Axis Lock

The knife can be opened using a double-sided thumb stud. The reliable Axis Lock, a pin pressed by two springs overlapping the back of the blade, prevents accidental opening. It is simple and resistant to heavy loads.

Handle made of Noryl GTX

The scales of the ergonomically shaped handle are made of lightweight and durable FRN composite - fibreglass reinforced nylon. The rough texture of the scales ensures a secure grip. There is a hole at the rear of the knife for threading a safety lanyard.

spring clip

The knife is equipped with a spring clip that allows convenient carrying when attached to a belt or pocket edge. The clip is reversible and can be mounted in the tip-up position suitable for both right and left-handed users.

Benchmade Knife Company is an American brand founded in 1988 by Les de Asis in Oregon, with roots dating back to the 1970s when it operated as Bali-Song. The company became famous for producing folding and combat knives, and its butterfly logo refers to the first balisong models, which were awarded the title of Knife of the Year in 1979. Today, Benchmade manufactures knives in three lines: Blue Class, Black Class, and Gold Class, using modern powder steels such as S30V, M390, and CPM-20CV, and the patented Axis Lock, valued for its reliability and smooth operation. Among the brand's icons are the Griptilian, Bugout, 940 Osborne, Infidel, and Bushcrafter models, and the company regularly collaborates with renowned knifemakers such as Mel Pardue, Warren Osborne, and Ernest Emerson. Benchmade was the first knife manufacturer in the US to implement fully automated CNC production, achieving unprecedented precision and repeatability in the industry.

CPM S30V feature
CPM S30V
CPM S30V is a powder stainless steel developed by Crucible Industries in collaboration with knifemaker Chris Reeve. It is distinguished by its precisely selected formula, containing carbon, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. The carbon content is approximately 1.45%, which ensures high hardness and long-lasting sharpness. Chromium (approximately 14%) is responsible for very good corrosion resistance, which makes S30V steel suitable for use in various, even difficult environments. Additions of molybdenum (approximately 2%) and vanadium (approximately 4%) increase the steel's wear resistance and improve its strength. As a result, CPM S30V provides an optimal balance between hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance, making it an ideal choice for the production of high-quality knives. After heat treatment, the steel achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, which is crucial for maintaining a sharp edge and resistance to deformation under stress.
Axis-Lock feature
Axis-Lock
Axis-Lock is a folding knife locking mechanism patented by Bill McHenry and Jason Williams, popularized and licensed by Benchmade. A spring steel bar (crossbar) slides transversely between the scales and fits into a recess on the back of the blade, firmly locking it in the open position. The mechanism works thanks to two omega springs that press the bar into the lock, ensuring smooth, two-handed operation and no play. To close the knife, simply slide the bar toward the rear of the handle and release the catch, allowing you to safely fold the blade without risking contact between your fingers and the blade.
FRN - Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon feature
FRN - Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon
FRN (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon) is a glass fiber reinforced nylon often used in knife handles. It is produced by injection molding, which results in a lightweight, durable construction that is resistant to moisture, chemicals, and mechanical damage. The surface of FRN can be textured, which improves grip in various conditions. Thanks to its combination of lightness, durability, and ease of production, FRN is a popular choice for EDC and utility knives.

Ordered last night, arrived this morning. I love militaria, the knife is very pleasant, I had to learn how to open and close it quickly. It's so lightweight you don't feel it in your pocket, mine came sharp, shaves easily. The first impression is that it's very delicate, but that's not the case. The composites used are just lightweight. I previously had a kopis type knife, then a drop point, but now I'm starting to appreciate this blade shape. I've had it for an hour, it's very nice, and a plus is the option to switch the clip.

Well, what can I say. Top shelf among knife manufacturers. I considered buying it for quite a while, and now I don't regret a single zloty spent on it. I only regret that I waited so long. I recommend this model and manufacturer.

Switching from the RAT 1 to the Grip is an interesting change, the knife is nicely made, keeps its sharpness well, and fits comfortably in the hand. Definitely worth considering buying!
