Temperature range and usage conditions

The operating temperatures of the Defence Top 1 sleeping bag are specified in accordance with EN 13537:

T-limit: 4 deg. C - the minimum temperature at which a man can sleep through the night without discomfort,
T-extreme: -10 deg. C - the lowest temperature at which it is possible to survive in the sleeping bag. This is not a value recommended for standard use.

Shellproof polyamide

Both the exterior and interior layers utilize Shellproof polyamide, crafted from nylon microfibers and featuring a microporous barrier that delivers superior moisture protection and enhanced resistance to abrasion.

G-Loft insulation, Thermoflect

The core of the sleeping bag is equipped with lightweight synthetic G-Loft insulation, ensuring optimal thermal comfort. Thanks to dual-layer insulation, its heat-retaining ability remains intact even after exposure to moisture, frequent washing, or rigorous use. An added Thermoflect layer further enhances warmth by reflecting body heat back inside the bag. The generously sized outer shell is designed to avoid contact with the inner lining, establishing an extra layer of insulation.

Central zipper, Anti Snag system

Equipped with a two-way central zipper, the sleeping bag can be fully opened for convenience. The Anti Snag system is designed to prevent the fabric from getting caught in the zipper. A thermal flap runs along the zipper, enhancing defense against cold ingress. To keep the zipper securely in place during rest, a Velcro tab is positioned at the top. The trapezoidal footbox provides increased legroom and superior heat retention.

Integrated hood for cold protection

Featuring a contoured hood with an adjustable face opening, allowing for a tailored fit via drawcords.

Easy transport and storage

Compact packing ensures the sleeping bag occupies minimal space, making both transport and storage hassle-free. With packed measurements of 18 x 25 cm and a weight of just 1190 g, carrying the bag is effortless and won’t weigh down your equipment.

G-Loft insulation

G-Loft insulation is an advanced material consisting of a three-dimensional structure of hollow polyester fibers that trap dry air to form an effective thermal insulation layer. These fibers retain their shape thanks to a memory effect, allowing them to return to their original form after getting wet, washing and heavy use. Review for model:

I chose the Defence 1 for warmer trips where you don't need a typical winter sleeping bag, but I still care about thermal comfort. It is very well made: the fabric is solid and durable, I am not worried that something will rip, and the sleeping bag is really comfortable to sleep in. The olive color is practical; dirt is not very visible. In terms of thermal performance, it is great for spring, summer, and cooler nights, but at lower temperatures, it's worth having a good sleeping mat and extra clothing. The sleeping bag is not the lightest and takes up some space when packed, so it's not an option for people looking for ultralight gear for mountain expeditions—it's more of a classic, solid sleeping bag for everyday use. One minor note: it’s better to zip it slowly to avoid catching the fabric—when tired at night, it’s easy to hurry. Overall, it's worth its price, especially if you expect a durable product with no unpleasant surprises.

It's hard to judge the quality immediately after purchase—I assume it's as it should be for a reputable brand. However, I am disappointed with Carinthia's information policy, as they provide misleading parameters for their products. According to the manufacturer, the sleeping bag should weigh 1050g and have a packed size of 18x25cm. These were important parameters for me—it was supposed to be no heavier, preferably lighter and smaller than the summer MON sleeping bag, with similar temperature ratings. It is not. It is heavier and much larger when packed than the manufacturer claims. The MON version weighs 1200g, the Defence 1 Top Medium weighs 1300g (!), declared: 1150g. Packed size is 20x34cm (!) compared to the declared 18x25cm. Even with compression straps, you cannot achieve these dimensions; the best you get is 19x30cm. I wonder if the declared and actual temperature ranges are similarly inaccurate... When paying for an expensive brand, you'd like to be sure of the manufacturer's assurances.
