Cold Steel Chaos Bowie SK-5 Fixed Blade Knife

A tactical knife drawing inspiration from the legendary combat blades of both world wars. The Bowie-style blade, crafted from SK-5 steel and finished with a black powder coating, offers exceptional durability combined with excellent cutting performance. Rugged 6061 aluminum handle scales and a Secure-Ex sheath with an integrated belt loop deliver reliable durability, ergonomic handling, and easy knife carry.

Durable and easy to sharpen SK-5 steel

The blade is crafted from high-carbon SK-5 tool steel, renowned for its exceptional durability, outstanding resistance to cracking, chipping, and dulling, and ease of sharpening. Thanks to a specialized heat treatment process, the steel reaches a hardness of 63-65 HRC, delivering a robust construction that offers excellent abrasion resistance and enhanced longevity.

Bowie profile blade

Featuring a Bowie-style blade measuring 266 mm in length and 5 mm in thickness, this knife offers a smooth cutting edge complemented by a flat grind. The blade's geometry delivers superior slicing capability while preserving formidable piercing performance. Outfitted with a tough, scratch-resistant Black Powder coating, the blade is effectively shielded from corrosion and prevents unwanted glare.

Aluminum handle, 1055 spring steel glass breaker

A distinctive D-shaped guard crafted from reinforced 6061 aluminum provides superior safety and a secure grip, efficiently shielding the hand from sliding onto the blade. The handle features a robust, sizable 1055 spring steel glass breaker at its end, doubling as a versatile field tool.

Secure-Ex system sheath

The knife is equipped with a sheath crafted from the Secure-Ex system, offering a lightweight, robust, and externally resistant solution. A fitted inlet combined with an additional snap fastener ensures the knife is held securely in place, minimizing the risk of unintentional release. Featuring a detachable belt loop, the sheath enables fast attachment to a belt without requiring its removal, while multiple holes and grommets provide versatile and multi-position mounting options on gear.

Cold Steel is a renowned American brand of knives, machetes and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company has gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, which are appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It has also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which ensures high strength and wear resistance. Cold Steel has patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand cooperates with renowned knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko, whose passion and experience contribute to the high quality of the products.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
SK-5 feature
SK-5

SK-5 steel belongs to a series of Japanese tool steel (Steel Kuogu) with high carbon content and good wear resistance. It is equivalent to American 1080 steel and is also designated as SK-85. It contains about 0.8-0.9% carbon, which gives it high hardness and very good cutting properties. The addition of manganese (0.1-0.5%) improves hardenability, silicon (0.1-0.35%) increases elasticity and strength, and small amounts of chromium (about 0.3%) and copper (up to 0.025%) promote the steel's wear resistance and slow down degradation processes. The presence of nickel (up to 0.25%) further enhances strength, while low sulfur and phosphorus content reduces the material's brittleness. After quenching, SK-5 reaches a hardness of up to 63-65 HRC, and its martensitic structure with fine carbides provides a favorable combination of wear resistance and mechanical strength. Thanks to these properties, the steel is used in chisels, saws, springs, drills, and in utility and tactical knives.

1055 feature
1055
1055 is a medium-carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.5-0.6%, characterized by a good combination of hardness, impact strength, and resilience. It is a steel with a simple chemical composition, containing mainly carbon and a small amount of manganese (0.6-0.9%), which improves the impact strength and hardenability of the material. Thanks to these properties, 1055 steel is widely used in the production of machetes, bushcraft knives, swords, and tools designed for heavier field work. After proper hardening, the steel achieves a hardness of 54-57 HRC, which ensures high resistance to cracks and chipping, but at the same time makes it easy to sharpen. However, due to its relatively low abrasion resistance and susceptibility to rust, this steel does not retain its sharpness for long.
Powder feature
Powder
Powder coating is a modern finish that creates a hard and durable protective layer on metal elements, including knife blades. The process involves electrostatically applying dry powder to the surface and curing it in an oven, resulting in a thicker and more uniform coating than traditional paints. Powder Coat does not contain solvents and is more environmentally friendly, prevents the coating from running during application, and provides high resistance to corrosion, scratches, impacts, chemicals, and UV radiation. The coating is available in a wide range of colors and textures, from smooth to rough, allowing you to customize the look and functionality of the finish.

Very solid. It's a bit uncomfortable to hold in the hand with only one finger guard. That's probably the only downside. I have no problem drawing it from the sheath with one hand.

A combination of a sword and a sabre. It makes an impression and is quite heavy. Probably not suitable for EDC...

A nice knife inspired by the M1918 trench knife – definitely for a collection, because even if you find a use for it, how are you supposed to carry it discreetly?

The knife is great in every way: appearance, workmanship, balance, size – a real machine. The sheath is not as good – the opening is tight, I spent two hours filing so that the knife could be taken out and inserted with one hand. The store, as always, deserves six stars.
