Cold Steel Facon 1090 Fixed Blade Knife

A durable knife with a fixed blade featuring a Drop-Point profile made of 1090 carbon steel. The dark brown handle, crafted from durable Sal wood, ensures a secure grip. The set includes a black leather sheath that allows the knife to be carried comfortably on a belt.

The design is inspired by traditional long Facon knives used by South American herders (Gauchos). These knives were used both for self-defense and for everyday tasks, such as preparing meals, repairing saddles, or setting up a place to sleep.

1090 carbon steel

The knife blade is made of 1090 carbon steel, which offers good hardness and wear resistance. After proper heat treatment, the steel achieves a hardness of 55–58 HRC, resulting in a durable and easy-to-sharpen cutting edge; however, it requires regular maintenance due to its susceptibility to corrosion.

Drop-Point profile blade, satin finish method

The wide and massive blade with a Deop-Point profile is 304 mm long and 5 mm thick. The smooth cutting edge has been finished with a full flat grind. The blade is distinguished by its symmetrical shape and narrow, sharp tip, which ensures precise cuts and good piercing ability. The blade has a satin finish, which gives it a semi-matte surface, ensuring an attractive appearance and increasing scratch resistance.

Handcrafted Sal wood handle

The comfortable, durable, hand-crafted handle is made of exotic Sal wood (strong damar). It features a bolster and is finished with a decorative nickel-plated steel pommel. The notches on the grip and the jimping on the blade spine ensure good control of the knife, even with wet or dirty hands.

Leather sheath with fitting

The set includes a black sheath, made of thick leather, that allows you to safely carry the knife on your belt. The sheath is finished with a decorative nickel-plated steel ferrule.

1090 feature
1090
1090 is a carbon steel with an average carbon content of approximately 0.90%, which gives it good hardness and abrasion resistance. It achieves a hardness of 55-58 HRC after appropriate heat treatment, which allows for a durable cutting edge. Thanks to its simple composition (carbon and manganese), it is also easy to machine and has good hardenability properties. 1090 steel is relatively susceptible to corrosion, which requires proper protection and maintenance. It is widely used in the manufacture of knives, cutting tools, machetes, and in projects requiring high hardness and wear resistance. Although it does not contain alloying additives that improve corrosion resistance, its strength and ease of sharpening make it widely used in work tools and medium-hardness knives.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Amazing knife, I tested it in the kitchen and it's great. Of course, it's thick and thin kitchen knives have the advantage, but the steel here does the job, carbon steel is carbon steel, and the weight of the knife is impressive.
