Cold Steel Kobun AUS8A Knife

A tactical knife with a Tanto-profile blade featuring a satin finish, made of AUS-8A stainless steel with high corrosion resistance. This model combines the functionality of a survival knife with the capabilities of a combat knife. The reinforced Full Tang construction ensures high durability. The black Kray-Ex handle guarantees a secure grip thanks to its non-slip texture. The name draws on Japanese culture, where the term “Kobun” refers to the rank of a warrior or soldier. The set includes a Secure-Ex sheath, which can be attached to a belt or other piece of gear.

Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel

The blade is made of Japanese-made AUS-8A stainless steel, which offers a balanced combination of corrosion resistance and cutting edge durability. The use of the appropriate heat treatment results in a hardness of 58–60 HRC.

Satin Tanto profile blade

The Tanto-profile blade is 139.7 mm long and 3.5 mm thick. The satin finish on the blade provides a subtle, semi-matte appearance, reducing unwanted glare. The smooth cutting edge has been hollow-ground. The reinforced tip, characteristic of this profile, with the full thickness of the spine maintained almost to the very tip, ensures high durability. The knife performs very well when tackling difficult, demanding tasks.

Kray-Ex handle with anti-slip texture

The black handle, made of Kray-Ex with deep texturing, provides a secure grip even with wet or dirty hands. The full-tang construction, in which the blade tang extends the entire length of the handle, remaining only slightly narrower than the handle itself, ensures high strength and stability. The short, double-sided cross guard effectively prevents the hand from sliding onto the blade during use. There is a hole at the rear of the handle for attaching a safety cord or lanyard.

sheath with Secure-Ex system clip

The knife comes with a Secure-Ex sheath made of lightweight, durable material that can withstand harsh weather conditions. The sheath holds the knife securely in place thanks to a precisely fitted opening, which eliminates the risk of accidental ejection. Equipped with a metal clip, the sheath allows for quick attachment to a belt, and numerous holes and grommets enable multi-position mounting on various pieces of gear, allowing the user to customize how it is carried to suit their individual needs.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
AUS-8A feature
AUS-8A
AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

I bought this knife as a second one because it's worth having such a gem in a few places; it is very sharp and made of very good steel (+ "serration" - great). Beautiful design and handy handle.

Very sharp and versatile (the blade has a saw). When ordering, I wondered if it would be too small, but it turned out the blade is long enough to be useful, while the knife itself is handy – it doesn't restrict freedom of movement. And that classic Japanese design!

A beautiful knife whose exquisite simplicity of form shows its ties to Japanese culture. Light, sleek, sharp, functional, suitable for everything. Intended for my son focused on a military path, but I'm tempted to buy one for myself as well.

A very decent knife. The price and the Japanese-style design are a plus. The steel in this price range is very good. The downside is sharpening those narrow serrations. You really have to work at it.

Made of high-quality steel, it guarantees high quality, holds its sharpness very well, and can serve as a hatchet in the forest. It is light yet made of very durable material. I highly recommend it to all survival enthusiasts; it's perfect for building a shelter and defending yourself from an unknown attacker or a large animal. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a sense of security and solo outings in the woods. A knife well worth recommending. Krzysztof W.

The knife is absolutely phenomenal, love at first sight. It's light and flat. Arrives properly sharpened. For people with large hands, it might be a little uncomfortable, but for me, it's perfect. The handle sticks to your hand, which can actually cause it to collect dirt.
