Cold Steel Pocket Bushman 4116 Folding Knife

A folding knife designed for bushcraft and everyday carry (EDC). The Clip-Point blade is made of German 4116 Cryo-Quenched steel, which is corrosion-resistant. The blade features a smooth cutting edge with a matte Stonewash finish. The ergonomic handle is crafted from a single piece of 420 steel. The knife opens via a thumb stud, and the Ram Safe Lock ensures safe operation.

German 4116 Cryo Quenched steel

The blade is made of German 4116 stainless steel that has been cryo-quenched, a process that stabilizes the material’s structure and increases its wear resistance. This steel is characterized by good strength, high corrosion resistance, and the ability to retain its sharpness for longer. After proper heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 55–57 HRC.

Clip-Point blade, Stonewash finish

The Clip-Point blade is 114 mm long and 3.5 mm thick. The smooth cutting edge was shaped using a flat grind. The surface has undergone a Stonewash finish, creating a matte texture that effectively hides signs of everyday use. This combination of features allows the knife to handle precise cutting well while also withstanding more demanding applications.

Pressed 420 steel handle, spring clip

The 420 steel handle was manufactured by forming thick sheet metal through a stamping process, creating a single, solid piece. The ergonomic shape, featuring a distinct notch for the index finger, ensures a stable and controlled grip, even without a pronounced texture. A metal tip-up clip is attached to the handle and can be repositioned to either side, allowing for comfortable use by both right- and left-handed users.

Ram Safe Lock, double-sided stud

In the open position, the blade is secured by the Ram-Safe-Lock mechanism designed by Andrew Demko. A spring-loaded steel piston moves through a channel in the handle and, once the blade is extended, locks into a corresponding notch. A key feature of the lock is its angular profile; under load, it tightens on its own, increasing the strength of the connection. To unlock it, you must pull the tang back using the cord at the rear of the handle.

The knife is opened using a double-sided thumb stud, allowing for comfortable operation by both right- and left-handed users.

Cold Steel is a respected American brand of knives, machetes, and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which provides high durability and wear resistance. Cold Steel patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand works with respected knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko, whose passion and experience contribute to the high quality of the products.

420 feature
420
420 is a martensitic stainless steel often used in cutlery, especially in kitchen knives, EDC, and budget outdoor models. It is characterized by a relatively low carbon content (0.16-0.25%), which allows for a hardness range of 54-57 HRC, ensuring easy sharpening and resistance to chipping. Chromium (12-14%) provides good corrosion resistance, making the steel suitable for use in humid conditions. Silicon and manganese additives (up to 1%) improve strength and hardenability, while low sulfur and phosphorus content reduce the brittleness of the material. 420 steel is valued for its high corrosion resistance, relatively high impact strength (resistance to cracks and chipping), and low processing costs. Thanks to its ease of machining and polishing, it is popular in the production of low- and mid-range knives.
4116 Cryo Quenched feature
4116 Cryo Quenched
4116 Cryo Quenched is an improved version of 4116 stainless steel (DIN 1.4116), produced by ThyssenKrupp, subjected to additional cryogenic treatment, which improves its durability and mechanical properties. The carbon content (0.45-0.55%) ensures good hardness, while chromium (14-15%) provides corrosion resistance. The steel also contains molybdenum, vanadium, manganese, silicon, and nickel, which support its strength. The cryogenic process stabilizes the steel, increases wear resistance, and maintains sharpness for longer. After heat treatment, it reaches a hardness of 55-57 HRC, making it easy to maintain and resistant to corrosion. It is widely used in the production of kitchen knives and premium utility tools.
Ram Safe Lock feature
Ram Safe Lock

The Ram Safe Lock is a locking mechanism created by knifemaker Andrew Demko. It was designed to work with monolithic handles, like the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman model. At its core is a steel piston, which, thanks to the force of a spring, moves forward, applying continuous pressure. This solution effectively secures the blade both in the closed and open positions. A key element is the angled profile of the piston, which, when the blade is deployed, fits between the blade pin and the metal frame. The more pressure applied to the blade, the stronger the connection becomes, with the lock tightening itself under load. The mechanism is durable and resistant to natural wear.

This is my first EDC. So far, I am very satisfied – the knife is solid, well-made, and very sharp. You can feel that it's quality equipment. A great start in EDC.

Knife – a beast. My favorite EDC (I carry it every day). Its lock is second to none in terms of strength. In addition, the design allows you to open and close the knife with full control. No chance of accidental opening, which makes it very safe. The knife consists of 10 parts. You can easily take it apart, clean, oil, and reassemble it. Despite its size, it's quite flat. Sharpens well, and edge retention is at a good level. Personally, I find it comfortable to use. The only folding knife I would trust in the field. One note: I don't recommend prying with it. The steel is quite hard and the tip is heavily tapered.

Interesting locking mechanism! That's what tempted me to buy it. The handle has average ergonomics. Opening with one hand is relatively difficult, folding is almost impossible. Durable but slow knife.

The knife is a blast, but the handle gets uncomfortable in the hand during prolonged use…

The knife is a blast, but the handle becomes uncomfortable during longer use. The steel edges dig into your hand. I'm looking for a way to fix it, but I haven't figured it out yet, since the blade hiding mechanism complicates things a bit. But the knife itself is fantastic. It sharpens quickly and handles huge loads. It also works well with hard wood, but that takes some skill.

Solid knife. Solid brand. Fits everything!

Large knife. Interesting lock. That's why I bought it. The steel could be better, but it's easy to sharpen to razor-sharpness.

Strong knife, very strong lock, so there's no fear it will accidentally fold during tougher tasks.

Probably a very underrated knife. Not everyone can close it, and that's a big plus.

Great knife. It's a surprise that you can get a piece of decent steel for such money. An uncompromising knife, not for fidgeters or those who like to 'shoot' knives or folder enthusiasts. It's a knife for hard work, for the whole day or for a trip. Folding it is not dangerous at all, you just have to be consistent and do it properly. In low temperatures, because of the handle, only use with gloves. Super knife, you'll stop using overpriced knives and feel like a man ;)

The best folding knife for me. The weight and dimensions of the knife when unfolded are impressive. Beautiful raw look. The lock works perfectly. Definitely for tougher jobs. Factory sharp. You can attach the knife to your pants with a clip. Amazing for its price range. A true workhorse. Highly recommended!

Very well made. Really solid knife. You can feel it in your hand.

Probably the most durable folding knife in its price range. Used like a fixed blade knife, and I still couldn't wear it out. Buying a second one because I lost the first, but as a folding workhorse it has no equal.

Solid, big knife, which I like. Secure lock. You have to get used to the knife to get comfortable with the lock. I recommend it.
