Cold Steel Talwar XL S35VN Plain Edge Folding Knife

The Folding knife from the Talwar XL line features a robust, wide blade with a Straight Back profile and a flat grind, delivering superior cutting performance. A satin finish is applied to the blade. Crafted from S35VN stainless steel, the blade offers outstanding resistance to wear and corrosion. The black handle is constructed from G10 laminate with a non-slip texture for a secure grip. Deployment is achieved via a double-sided thumb disk, while the Tri-Ad Lock mechanism ensures safe operation.

S35VN stainless steel

Forged from CPM S35VN powder steel, the blade is distinguished by its exceptional corrosion resistance and outstanding edge retention. Subjected to precise heat treatment, the steel reaches a hardness of 58-61 HRC, ensuring prolonged sharpness and reliable performance in daily tasks.

Straight Back profile blade with satin finish

Featuring a Straight Back profile, the blade offers a smooth cutting edge and measures 140 mm in length with a thickness of 4 mm. Distinguished by its straight, subtly descending spine, this blade shape supports a wide range of uses. Engineered with a flat grind, the blade guarantees outstanding cutting performance. A satin finish delivers a semi-matte appearance and improves resistance against light scratches.

Profiled G10 laminate handle, jimping, flexible clip

Constructed from robust G10 laminate, the handle features layers of fiberglass reinforced with epoxy resin. Noted for its excellent resistance to damage, ability to repel moisture, and lightweight nature, this material is ideal for demanding conditions. Ergonomically shaped finger grooves provide a secure and reliable grip, even when hands are wet or dirty. Additional jimping along the spine offers firm thumb placement, enabling enhanced blade control during precision tasks.

Equipped with a flexible clip for effortless portability, the knife can be securely fastened to a belt or pocket. The reversible configuration ensures comfortable use for both right- and left-handed users. A dedicated hole at the handle’s base is designed for attaching a safety lanyard.

Tri-Ad Lock, double-sided thumb disk

The Tri-Ad Lock guarantees secure operation, renowned as one of the toughest and most dependable mechanisms found in folding knives. A stop pin absorbs the forces exerted on the blade, efficiently channeling stress into the handle and minimizing wear on the lock components. Thanks to its design, the system automatically adjusts during use, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability. The blade is equipped with a double-sided thumb disk, providing effortless ambidextrous opening and fast deployment by catching the edge of the pocket.

CPM S35VN feature
CPM S35VN
CPM S35VN is a stainless powder steel developed by Crucible Industries in collaboration with Chris Reeve, used in premium knives. It is an evolution of the popular S30V steel, offering a better balance between wear resistance, stainlessness, and ease of machining. Carbon (approx. 1.4%) is responsible for high hardness, while chromium (approx. 14%) gives the steel very good corrosion resistance, and vanadium (approx. 3%) extends edge life and improves cutting aggression. After hardening, it reaches 58-61 HRC, combining edge durability with fracture resistance. The steel retains its sharpness for a long time and is easy to sharpen, commonly used in EDC, outdoor, tactical, and collector's knives.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Very nice, fits well in the hand. It is quite a large, wide knife and you have to remember that, but it fits in your pocket. The lock and build are rock solid, I have the impression that when unfolded it feels like a fixed-blade knife.

The knife is okay, but at this price the finish is unsatisfactory, the grind at the tip of the blade is clearly crooked. I hope it will almost completely improve after a few sharpenings.

An uncompromising machete, a clip point on steroids. The blade is similar in size to the Voyager XL Vaquero/Clip point, but in the Talwar the tip is much thicker, which gives you greater confidence that you won't break it accidentally by hitting some harder material. Compared to the Voyager models—longer handle, resulting in a greater cutting reach if you grip the knife at the very end of the scales. The TriAdLock lock rubbed slightly where it contacts the blade (remnants from the factory machining of the main lock element). This does not have a significant impact on the ease of opening/closing the knife, but for perfectionists—it requires a light sanding with high-grit sandpaper.
