Cold Steel Talwar XL S35VN Serrated Folding Knife

Talwar XL series folding knife features a robust, wide blade with a Straight Back profile and a flat grind that delivers excellent cutting performance. The serrated blade boasts a satin finish for enhanced durability and appearance. Crafted from S35VN stainless steel, the blade offers outstanding resistance to both wear and corrosion. A black handle constructed from G10 laminate with an anti-slip texture ensures a secure grip. Deployment is swift thanks to the thumb disk, while the Tri-Ad Lock mechanism guarantees reliable user safety.

S35VN stainless steel

The blade is made of CPM S35VN powder-coated steel, which is characterized by high corrosion resistance and excellent cutting edge durability. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58–61 HRC, which ensures long-lasting sharpness and reliable performance during everyday use.

Straight Back profile blade with satin finish

The blade, featuring a Straight Back profile with a serrated cutting edge, is 140 mm long and 4 mm thick. Characteristic of this shape is a straight, slightly sloping spine line, which makes the knife versatile. The blade has a flat grind, ensuring good cutting performance. The entire blade has been finished with a satin finish, which gives the blade a semi-matte surface and increases its resistance to minor scratches.

Profiled G10 laminate handle, jimping, springy clip

The handle is made of durable G10 laminate, consisting of layers of fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin. This material is highly resistant to damage and moisture, and is lightweight. The contoured finger grooves improve grip, even when the hand is wet or dirty. The spine features jimping, which provides a stable thumb rest and better control over the blade during precise cuts.

For convenient carrying, there is a spring-loaded clip that allows you to attach the knife to a pocket or belt. Its reversible design makes the knife suitable for both right- and left-handed users. At the end of the handle, there is a hole for attaching a safety lanyard.

Tri-Ad Lock, double-sided thumb disk

Safety during use is ensured by the Tri-Ad Lock, considered one of the most durable and reliable locking mechanisms used in folding knives. The design utilizes a stop pin that absorbs stress from the blade, effectively distributing it to the handle and reducing wear on the locking components. This system automatically adjusts during use, ensuring it remains reliable for a long time. The blade features a thumb disc, allowing for comfortable opening of the knife with either hand and quick deployment of the blade by catching it on the edge of a pocket.

Cold Steel is a respected American brand of knives, machetes, and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which provides high durability and wear resistance. Cold Steel patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand works with respected knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko, whose passion and experience contribute to the high quality of the products.

CPM S35VN feature
CPM S35VN
CPM S35VN is a stainless powder steel developed by Crucible Industries in collaboration with Chris Reeve, used in premium knives. It is an evolution of the popular S30V steel, offering a better balance between wear resistance, stainlessness, and ease of machining. Carbon (approx. 1.4%) is responsible for high hardness, while chromium (approx. 14%) gives the steel very good corrosion resistance, and vanadium (approx. 3%) extends edge life and improves cutting aggression. After hardening, it reaches 58-61 HRC, combining edge durability with fracture resistance. The steel retains its sharpness for a long time and is easy to sharpen, commonly used in EDC, outdoor, tactical, and collector's knives.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Very nice, fits well in the hand. It is quite a large, wide knife and you have to remember that, but it fits in your pocket. The lock and build are rock solid, I have the impression that when unfolded it feels like a fixed-blade knife.

The knife is okay, but at this price the finish is unsatisfactory, the grind at the tip of the blade is clearly crooked. I hope it will almost completely improve after a few sharpenings.

An uncompromising machete, a clip point on steroids. The blade is similar in size to the Voyager XL Vaquero/Clip point, but in the Talwar the tip is much thicker, which gives you greater confidence that you won't break it accidentally by hitting some harder material. Compared to the Voyager models—longer handle, resulting in a greater cutting reach if you grip the knife at the very end of the scales. The TriAdLock lock rubbed slightly where it contacts the blade (remnants from the factory machining of the main lock element). This does not have a significant impact on the ease of opening/closing the knife, but for perfectionists—it requires a light sanding with high-grit sandpaper.
