I haven't used the watch itself as a compass so far, but during mountain trips it was nice to glance at it and mentally confirm the direction. If your mind is calm, your walk is more pleasant. Unfortunately, the time it takes to set north is long, checking this watch takes as much time as pulling out a decent high-end compass from your pocket, but as a backup option to roughly know where north is, it's perfect.
