A very good emergency ration for survival, trekking, or as an emergency backup. The wafers are lightweight, filling, and have a long shelf life, so they are great for a backpack or car. The taste is simple and slightly sweet, but for survival food, it really does the job. Big plus for being able to eat them dry or after adding water. Well-secured packaging and high caloric content are invaluable during trips and emergencies.
Katadyn NRG-5 Emergency Food Ration
Emergency Food Ration NRG-5 is available as high-energy compressed wafers, ideal for emergency situations. Sealed hermetically in a multi-layered package, these rations offer a shelf life of up to 20 years. The wafers have a mildly sweet flavor and can be consumed dry like crackers or softened in warm water. With a low overall weight, the package containing 9 wafers ensures easy transport and distribution during survival missions. An airtight seal safeguards the contents from air and moisture, making these rations optimal for long-term storage and ready for use as reliable "iron rations" in critical scenarios.

For me, it worked well as emergency food – it takes up little space, but it really fills you up. The taste, for me, is absolutely fine, slightly sweet and reminiscent of a cookie, so you don’t get the impression that it’s typical "survival" food, which often happens with this type of product. I’ve already taken it on several trips and often keep it in the car just in case. I like that it requires no preparation or special care. The packaging is sturdy, and the long shelf life is a big plus if you keep it as a backup. To sum up, it’s a very practical and reliable product, worth having both at home and while traveling.

Well... the product is rather unimpressive. The advantage is that you can reach for it in emergencies. On the downside, it is very fragile – it looks more like powder or fine granules than a traditional cookie in solid form. Because of this, using it is not very convenient as a large part falls apart already when opening the package. The taste leaves much to be desired, but that can be overlooked because it is only intended for emergency situations anyway.

I have a problem writing a review. The product is not bad, just a bit sweet. I expected a taste similar to salty crackers, but it is more like a lightly sweetened muesli bar. Its texture is very dense, as if there are many different grains in one bite.

To be honest, I'll share my clear opinion – I did not like this food pack. It tasted like chalk and nothing else. As I mentioned before, I previously bought 'Seven Oceans', which I liked much more, and it also cost less. It paired perfectly with hot tea or coffee and tasted like a crunchy biscuit. This is just my personal opinion. Now I'm sure that 'Seven Oceans' is a better choice for an emergency backpack.

I have tested various products. Each has its own minor pros and cons. It's hard to say definitively which product is better, as with food it is like with women – tastes are not to be discussed. Objectively: high caloric value, long shelf life. Tested on several expeditions as basic food (low weight, small volume, high calories, does not spoil) – it worked well. I definitely would not want to eat this for more than a week, but as emergency food, it serves its purpose. I can't say whether the green or brown version is tastier – I did not eat them at the same time, and the flavors are so similar that, for me, they are practically indistinguishable.

If you hold your nose and drink it with milk or water, you will enjoy eating it; otherwise, the taste might not be pleasant. The cubes easily fall apart in your hand, but that's probably because it's just regular powder with the moisture removed to provide a long shelf life.
-
The cubes crumble terribly, they are packed in foil, the taste is not great, but in an emergency situation it doesn't matter at all. The obvious advantage is the long shelf life, up to 20 years.
-
It has a long shelf life, tastes better than ground cardboard, nothing special, but I didn't buy it for the taste, just to fill the belly and as emergency food. It serves its purpose.
-
Very nice, high-energy, valuable ration. Attractive ratio of contents and calories to price. An extra plus for the super long shelf life. I honestly recommend it to everyone.
-
A very good food ration for crisis situations. We live in uncertain times and I can't imagine not having an emergency food supply. I think the price is adequate for the calories and shelf life.
-
The ration itself is extremely dry, but that's its charm—since it's supposed to be edible for up to 20 years. No one buys it for enjoyment, but rather to have it in case of a blackout or other unforeseen situations.
-
Emergency ration, bought just in case. Of course, I had to try it to make sure it's edible if necessary. And it's not that bad. The taste is quite good, but it's extremely dry, so it's best to drink water or something warm with it. It's worth having a small stock.
-
The taste is not amazing, but this is not food for everyday use, only for crisis situations. You don't need to eat much to stop feeling hungry, and a huge advantage here is the product's long shelf life.
