Kel-Met chain handcuffs serve as personal protective gear primarily employed by law enforcement bodies, including the Police and Border Guard, and are also utilized during intervention scenarios. Designed for situations where restraining an individual is required to guarantee the safety of both the officer and the apprehended person, they are frequently applied in the transport or securing of detainees. The handcuffs are distinguished by their wide wrist openings, addressing the demands put forward by Polish uniformed services.
Manufactured exclusively from stainless steel in accordance with PN-EN 10088-1, the product is non-toxic, highly resistant to mechanical damage, and does not trigger allergic responses. No galvanic coatings such as nickel or zinc are present in the handcuffs, ensuring compliance with the requirements set out in EU Directive 76/769/EEC-94/27/EEC for items intended for skin contact, as well as with forthcoming national regulations.
Comprising two interconnected wrist cuffs secured by a chainmail-style chain with rotating joints, the design of the cuffs minimizes the likelihood of abrasions and injuries when used correctly.
Constructed from steel, the cuffs feature a double-locking system and a movable ratchet arm. Each cuff incorporates a ratchet lock that can be engaged at any setting to guard against excessive tightening. Accidental opening prevention is activated by a pin integrated into the key. Engaging the pin secures the lock, while turning the key releases it.
The handcuffs are engineered to endure the following static force tests:
- A breaking force of 2300 N is applied within the plane of the cuff while the opposite cuff remains secured. Upon release of the force, complete operational integrity of the handcuffs is maintained.
- A bending force of 500 N is exerted perpendicularly at the end of the cuff located opposite the chain attachment. The handcuffs exhibit no permanent distortion under these conditions.
Kel-Met handcuffs are manufactured in accordance with the following standards:
- PN-EN 10088-1 – specification concerning stainless steel, detailing the material’s chemical composition and mechanical properties.
- 76/769/EEC-94/27/EEC – European Union directive restricting the presence of hazardous heavy metals, such as nickel, in items that make contact with skin. No galvanic coatings, including nickel or zinc layers, are present on the handcuffs.
- KGP Standard – fulfills the criteria set by the Polish National Police Headquarters for the design, safety, and operability of handcuffs.
