A medium-sized, exceptionally lightweight folding knife with an 8.5 cm locking blade. A modern version from a French manufacturer with over 100 years of tradition.
The clip point profile blade is made of stainless steel and features serrations over a 45 mm section, allowing it to cut high-density materials (for example ropes or straps). The steel has been polished to a semi-matte shine.
The knife can be opened thanks to a convenient hole cut into the upper part of the blade, which also serves as a shackle key. In the open position, the blade is locked by the viroblock lock patented in 1955. It is a steel ring on the handle positioned at the height of the blade pivot axis. After opening the knife, it is rotated by a few degrees so that it covers the blade slot in the handle, preventing any movement of the blade. In a similar way, the knife is secured against accidental opening when folded.
An integral part of the handle made of plastic resistant to damage, water, and high (80°C) and low (-40°C) temperatures is a survival whistle, which makes it possible to signal your presence in an emergency situation or, if needed, raise an alarm that will be heard by everyone nearby.
The set includes a durable nylon cord threaded through a hole drilled in the handle, making it easier to pull the knife out, for example from a backpack pocket. The cord also protects the knife from being lost. This is another Opinel knife in my collection. The knife is very futuristic compared to the traditional craftsmanship of Opinel knives. The build quality is superb. Opinels are probably some of the best mass-produced knives.
