A very well-written book. Admittedly, it only captures a fraction of the truth about Spetsnaz, but I still think it's worth reading. It was written by a Russian whose mentality needs to be understood.
The origins and organization of Specnaz represent elite strike groups within Soviet military intelligence, whose operations incorporated espionage, terror tactics, extensive sabotage, and guerrilla warfare. Their ranks included covert operatives—foreign nationals recruited by Soviet intelligence officers—specialized units featuring top athletes from the USSR, often world record holders or Olympic medalists, as well as squads made up of rigorously selected and expertly trained conscript soldiers. In his book, Viktor Suvorov delivers a comprehensive overview of Specnaz's history and organizational structure, offering insights into its key components, standard weaponry and equipment, fundamental tactical approaches, and deadly hand-to-hand combat training.
