Cordura — the fabric that revolutionised Outdoor. Find out why!
Cordura is a very durable fabric, most often made from nylon or polyester. Due to its strength and resistance to wear, it is used for producing outdoor and military clothing and accessories, as well as for manufacturing equipment for uniformed services. Read our article to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of Cordura, along with many other interesting facts!
The History of Cordura — Setting New Standards in Durability
Cordura was created in 1967 as a durable nylon fabric. Already in the 1970s, this material found wide application in the production of work clothing and outdoor equipment. Popular backpack brands such as Jansport® and Eastpak® quickly saw its potential and began using Cordura to manufacture bags and backpacks.
A real breakthrough occurred in the 1990s when the American army decided to use 1000D Cordura instead of traditional leather for producing combat boots. Over time, Cordura also started being used for footwear production, including by the famous brand Nike™.
Currently, Cordura is owned by the company Invista, which continuously works on the development of this material and introduces various variants, including innovative versions made from recycled materials, to the market.
Cordura – Material Advantages and Disadvantages
Cordura, like any material, has its strengths and weaknesses, but the positive aspects definitely outweigh the negatives. Advantages of Cordura include:
- Very high durability – e.g., Cordura 1000D withstands over 50,000 abrasion cycles and stress up to 3,000 N.
- Resistance to water and dirt – the material doesn't absorb water due to Teflon impregnation and PU coating.
- Resistance to weather and UV – it doesn't fade quickly, retains its properties.
- Lightweight relative to its durability – Cordura can be lighter than other equally durable materials.
Disadvantages of Cordura:
- Higher price compared to competitors.
- Less breathability and flexibility – it can be stiff and less comfortable in direct contact with the skin.
- Heavier than ultra-light synthetic fabrics (though the 500D version is a compromise).
- Dries slower after getting wet (although it doesn't absorb water deeply).
Cordura 1000D vs 500D - What’s the Difference?
Cordura 1000D is thicker and more resistant to abrasions, tears, and mechanical damage, which is why it is often used for producing military backpacks and tactical equipment. On the other hand, Cordura 500D is thinner, lighter, and more flexible, making it suitable for outdoor clothing.
What Products are Made from Cordura?
Cordura is used for producing backpacks, holsters, pouches, adapters, organizers, and many other tactical products. It is also used in footwear production, usually as an insert combined with natural or synthetic leather. This material is also used in clothing, for example, in jackets, to reinforce areas prone to abrasions. Below are products where Cordura has been used as a base or complementary material:
1. Helikon EDC Cordura Backpack 21 l - Black

2. Lowa Zephyr GTX MID MK2 Shoes - Desert

3. Helikon Guardian Multi Pouch Cordura - MultiCam

4. M-Tac Double Pouch for AK/AR Magazines - Ranger Green

Is Cordura Environmentally Friendly?
Traditional Cordura (made from standard nylon or polyester) is not an eco-friendly material by itself. However, because it is very durable, products made from it can last longer, which means we discard them less often, helping to protect the environment.
How to Care for Cordura Products to Make Them Last for Years?
Products made from Cordura, whether a backpack or a pair of shoes, are designed for durability and long-term use. However, with regular care and proper maintenance, you can ensure they last even longer and look great for many years:
- Clean Cordura products as soon as dirt appears, preferably by hand, using mild soap and warm water.
- If the label allows machine washing, use a gentle cycle and mild detergent, avoiding bleach.
- During drying, avoid exposing products to high temperatures or direct sunlight.
- Avoid ironing Cordura products unless the label clearly allows it.
