Cold Steel Bird & Trout Knife AUS-8A

An ultralight neck knife with a fixed Drop-Point blade, crafted from a single piece of AUS-8A stainless steel with a sandblasted finish. The model features a slim, monolithic design, and the elongated shape of the handle, which ends with a finger loop, allows for the use of any type of wrap to improve grip and achieve customization of the tool. The set includes a Secure-Ex sheath with a ball chain, allowing for comfortable carrying of the knife around the neck.

Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel

The blade is made of Japanese AUS-8A steel, which retains its sharpness for a long time and is easy to resharpen. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58–60 HRC, making it a robust material with good cutting performance, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Drop-Point profile blade, satin finish

The blade, with a Drop-Point profile, is 57 mm long and 2.6 mm thick. It features a smooth cutting edge finished with a full flat grind. This geometry, combined with the blade’s slim profile, ensures very good cutting performance and allows for precise work while maintaining full control during cuts. The knife is finished using the Bead Blast method (sandblasting), which gives the steel a matte finish, ensuring an attractive appearance and increasing scratch resistance.

The knife's steel handle has been contoured appropriately and de-burred, ensuring a secure grip and allowing for customization of the handle—for example, by wrapping it with parachute cord. The hole at the back is designed to fit the little finger, preventing the knife from slipping out of your hand when working in high-humidity conditions.

The set includes a Secure-Ex sheath, designed to hold the knife securely in place while allowing for quick draw when needed. Secure-Ex

Secure-Ex is a high-quality plastic used by Cold Steel to manufacture sheaths and knife cases. This material is characterized by exceptional durability, resistance to mechanical damage, and weather conditions, which makes it an ideal choice for products intended for intensive use. It protects the blade from corrosion and mechanical damage.

AUS-8A

AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.

Bead Blast

Bead Blast is a blade finishing technique that involves treating steel with a stream of fine ceramic or glass beads under high pressure. It gives the surface a uniform matte, satin-gray appearance without any light reflections. The surface obtained in the sandblasting process is smooth and aesthetic, but due to micro-pores, it may be slightly more susceptible to wear and corrosion if the blade is not properly protected. Nevertheless, Bead Blast is valued for its simplicity, discretion, and masking properties, which is why it is used in EDC, outdoor, and military knives.

Review for model:

I've only had the knife for a short time, but I'm impressed – it's a very handy and convenient knife for precise tasks like trimming something, opening a package, peeling fruit, and so on. The steel may not be top quality, but it's certainly not bad, and what’s very important for a knife that comes into contact with water or sweat (when wearing it around the neck) – it's stainless. The sheath holds it very securely; I hope it won't wear out, although on the other hand – you can always make a new Kydex sheath.

As a spare blade, it works great for small tasks. Very lightweight, so wearing it around the neck is comfortable. It hardly stands out under a shirt, and the chain looks like a military dog tag chain.
