Cold Steel Bird & Trout Knife AUS-8A

Ultralight neck knife featuring a fixed Drop-Point blade profile, crafted from a single piece of satin-finished AUS‑8A stainless steel. Designed with a slim, monolithic structure and an extended handle that terminates in a finger ring, the knife accommodates any paracord wrapping to enhance grip and customize the tool. Supplied with a Secure-Ex sheath and a ball chain for practical neck carry.

Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel

Forged from Japanese AUS-8A steel, the blade upholds long-lasting sharpness and allows for straightforward resharpening. Following heat treatment, the blade reaches a hardness of 58-60 HRC, providing excellent cutting performance, resilience, and strong resistance to corrosion.

Drop-Point profile blade, satin finish

Outfitted with a Drop-Point profile, the blade measures 57 mm in length and 2.6 mm in thickness. Designed with a plain edge and a full flat grind, the blade’s geometry together with its slim thickness delivers excellent cutting performance, facilitating precise tasks while providing complete control throughout each cut. Finished by the Bead Blast technique (satin finish), the steel acquires a matte surface that enhances its visual appeal and offers increased resistance to scratches.

steel handle, ring at the end

The steel handle of the knife features an ergonomic profile and is free of sharp edges, guaranteeing a secure hold and allowing for handle customization, such as wrapping with paracord. A hole located at the end is designed for inserting the pinky finger, helping to prevent accidental slipping during tasks performed in wet or humid environments.

Secure-Ex sheath

The package features a Secure-Ex sheath meticulously engineered to keep the knife firmly secured while still allowing for rapid deployment when required. Outfitted with a ball chain, the sheath enables convenient and comfortable carry around the neck. This carrying solution is highly effective for daily wear, as well as for outdoor, tactical, and survival scenarios.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
AUS-8A feature
AUS-8A
AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
Bead Blast feature
Bead Blast
Bead Blast is a blade finishing technique that involves treating steel with a stream of fine ceramic or glass beads under high pressure. It gives the surface a uniform matte, satin-gray appearance without any light reflections. The surface obtained in the sandblasting process is smooth and aesthetic, but due to micro-pores, it may be slightly more susceptible to wear and corrosion if the blade is not properly protected. Nevertheless, Bead Blast is valued for its simplicity, discretion, and masking properties, which is why it is used in EDC, outdoor, and military knives.

I've only had the knife for a short time, but I'm impressed – it's a very handy and convenient knife for precise tasks like trimming something, opening a package, peeling fruit, and so on. The steel may not be top quality, but it's certainly not bad, and what’s very important for a knife that comes into contact with water or sweat (when wearing it around the neck) – it's stainless. The sheath holds it very securely; I hope it won't wear out, although on the other hand – you can always make a new Kydex sheath.

As a spare blade, it works great for small tasks. Very lightweight, so wearing it around the neck is comfortable. It hardly stands out under a shirt, and the chain looks like a military dog tag chain.
