Cold Steel Espada XL G10 AUS-10A Folding Knife - Grey

Espada XL series folding knife equipped with a Clip-Point profile blade and a concave grind, delivering outstanding cutting performance. A black DLC (Diamond Like Coating) finish provides enhanced resistance to scratches and corrosion. Crafted from Japanese AUS-10A steel, the blade boasts superior corrosion resistance. The handle features grey G10 laminate with a non-slip surface for secure grip. Opening is facilitated by a double-sided thumb disk, while the Tri-Ad Lock mechanism guarantees reliable user safety.

Designed by renowned custom knifemaker Andrew Demko in collaboration with Cold Steel president Lynn C. Thompson, the model takes inspiration from classic Spanish Navaja knives.

Japanese AUS-10A steel

Forged from Japanese AUS-10A steel, the blade boasts impressive strength, outstanding resistance to corrosion, and superior wear resistance. Upon hardening, it reaches a hardness of 58-61 HRC.

Clip-Point profile blade with Diamond Like Coating

The clip-point blade has a length of 190 mm and a thickness of 3.7 mm. Designed with a smooth cutting edge and a concave grind, the blade shape provides exceptional cutting capability while preserving sufficient durability for demanding tasks. A black DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating covers the blade, offering protection from scratches, enhancing corrosion resistance, and reducing reflective glare.

Profiled handle made of G10 laminate, spring clip

The handle is constructed from robust G10 laminate, formed by compressing layers of fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin. Renowned for exceptional durability, G10 offers outstanding resistance to impact, moisture, and remains lightweight. Ergonomically shaped finger grooves provide a secure and reliable grip, maintaining control even in wet or muddy conditions. A practical spring clip ensures easy transport, enabling attachment to a pocket or belt. The reversible clip setup accommodates both right- and left-handed operators.

Tri-Ad lock, thumb disk

User safety is guaranteed by the Tri-Ad Lock, widely recognized as one of the toughest and most dependable locking mechanisms available in folding knives. The design incorporates a stop pin that absorbs forces generated by the blade, efficiently transferring them to the handle to minimize wear on the locking parts. This mechanism self-adjusts during operation, ensuring consistent reliability over years of use.

Equipped with a thumb disk, the blade enables easy two-handed opening and rapid deployment by catching on the edge of a pocket.

AUS-10 feature
AUS-10
AUS-10 is a high-quality stainless steel produced by the Japanese company Aichi Steel, considered one of the best in the AUS steel series, used mainly in mid-range and high-end utility knives, produced mainly in Japan and Taiwan. The carbon content (0.95-1.1%) ensures high hardness, while chromium (13-14.5%) guarantees very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. The steel also contains manganese (up to 1%), silicon (up to 1%), phosphorus (up to 0.025%), and sulfur (up to 0.025%), which affect hardenability, impact strength, elasticity, and machinability, improving structural stability and maintaining mechanical properties. After hardening, the steel achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, offering an excellent balance between strength, edge retention, and ease of sharpening. It is comparable to 440C steel, differing in carbon content and the addition of vanadium, which improves structural homogeneity and increases abrasion resistance.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
DLC - Diamond-Like Carbon feature
DLC - Diamond-Like Carbon
DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is a modern protective coating in which a thin layer of amorphous carbon with a structure similar to diamond is applied to steel. It increases the hardness and abrasion resistance of the blade, protects against corrosion, and reduces friction during cutting. The characteristic matte shade of black or anthracite gives the knife a tactical look and eliminates light reflections, which is important in military and outdoor applications. Thanks to its high scratch resistance, the blade retains its aesthetics and functional properties for longer, which is why the DLC finish is widely used in EDC, field, and tactical knives.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.

Great knife! Expensive but worth the money. In person, when you hold it in your hand, it makes an even bigger impression. It's something between a knife and a machete. Incredibly sharp, I even tested shaving my own calf! Quite heavy, but handy despite its size. Very, very solidly made, as if custom-ordered. It's almost a shame to use it, it's too beautiful :) For now, I'm practicing opening it with one hand, which isn't easy with this size knife. The automatic opening as you pull it from your pocket is also impressive.

Using the Espada XL brings a lot of joy, and the craftsmanship and attention to detail are stunning, making you want to carry it with you every day and take it out as often as possible. I've long wondered if owning such a marvel makes sense, and finally realized that it's made from such good materials and has so much power that you can do practically anything with it. For me, it's mainly a folding kitchen knife, which I use only for food outdoors or at friends' places. In my opinion, it's worth it!
