Cold Steel Espada XL G10 S35VN Folding Knife - Black

A folding knife from the Espada XL line with a Clip-Point blade featuring a hollow grind that ensures excellent cutting performance. The blade is finished with a satin finish. The blade is made of S35VN stainless steel, which is resistant to wear and corrosion. The black handle is made of G10 laminate with a non-slip texture. The knife opens using a double-sided thumb disc, and the Tri-Ad Lock ensures safe use.

The model was designed by renowned custom knife maker Andrew Demko and Cold Steel CEO Lynn C. Thompson. The design draws inspiration from Spanish Navaja knives.

S35VN stainless steel

The blade is made of CPM S35VN powder-coated steel, which is characterized by high corrosion resistance and excellent cutting edge durability. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58–61 HRC, which ensures long-lasting sharpness and reliable performance during everyday use.

Clip-Point profile blade, satin finish

The blade, with a Clip-Point profile, is 190 mm long and 4 mm thick. It features a smooth cutting edge achieved through a hollow grind. The blade’s geometry ensures high cutting efficiency while maintaining adequate strength, allowing for more intensive use of the knife. The blade is finished with a satin finish, which gives it a semi-matte surface and increases its resistance to scratches.

Contoured G10 laminate handle, spring clip

The knife’s handle is made of durable G10 laminate, composed of layers of fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin, which is highly resistant to damage and moisture and is lightweight. The design is complemented by polished bolsters and a 7075 aluminum framework, which enhance the handle’s durability. Contoured finger grooves improve control and grip, even when your hand is wet or dirty.

For convenient carrying, there is a spring-loaded clip that allows you to attach the knife to a pocket or belt. Its reversible design makes the knife comfortable to use for both right- and left-handed people.

Tri-Ad lock, thumb disc

Safety during use is ensured by the Tri-Ad Lock, considered one of the most durable and reliable locking mechanisms used in folding knives. The design incorporates a stop pin that absorbs stress from the blade, effectively distributing it to the handle and reducing wear on the locking components. This system automatically adjusts during use, ensuring it remains reliable for a long time.

The blade features a thumb disc, allowing for comfortable opening of the knife with either hand and quick deployment of the blade by catching it on the edge of a pocket.

Cold Steel is a respected American brand of knives, machetes, and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which provides high durability and wear resistance. Cold Steel patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand works with respected knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. CPM S35VN feature
CPM S35VN
CPM S35VN is a stainless powder steel developed by Crucible Industries in collaboration with Chris Reeve, used in premium knives. It is an evolution of the popular S30V steel, offering a better balance between wear resistance, stainlessness, and ease of machining. Carbon (approx. 1.4%) is responsible for high hardness, while chromium (approx. 14%) gives the steel very good corrosion resistance, and vanadium (approx. 3%) extends edge life and improves cutting aggression. After hardening, it reaches 58-61 HRC, combining edge durability with fracture resistance. The steel retains its sharpness for a long time and is easy to sharpen, commonly used in EDC, outdoor, tactical, and collector's knives.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Great knife! Expensive but worth the money. In person, when you hold it in your hand, it makes an even bigger impression. It's something between a knife and a machete. Incredibly sharp, I even tested shaving my own calf! Quite heavy, but handy despite its size. Very, very solidly made, as if custom-ordered. It's almost a shame to use it, it's too beautiful :) For now, I'm practicing opening it with one hand, which isn't easy with this size knife. The automatic opening as you pull it from your pocket is also impressive.

Using the Espada XL brings a lot of joy, and the craftsmanship and attention to detail are stunning, making you want to carry it with you every day and take it out as often as possible. I've long wondered if owning such a marvel makes sense, and finally realized that it's made from such good materials and has so much power that you can do practically anything with it. For me, it's mainly a folding kitchen knife, which I use only for food outdoors or at friends' places. In my opinion, it's worth it!
