Cold Steel Espada XL G10 S35VN Folding Knife - Black

Espada XL series folding knife, equipped with a Clip-Point blade featuring a concave grind for superior cutting efficiency. The blade has a satin finish and is crafted from S35VN stainless steel, recognized for exceptional wear and corrosion resistance. The black handle is made from G10 laminate, offering a non-slip surface. Blade deployment is facilitated by a double-sided thumb disc, while the Tri-Ad Lock mechanism provides outstanding safety during operation.

Designed collaboratively by acclaimed custom knifemaker Andrew Demko and Cold Steel president Lynn C. Thompson, the model pays homage to the iconic style of Spanish Navaja knives.

S35VN stainless steel

Forged from CPM S35VN powder steel, the blade delivers superior corrosion resistance and exceptional edge retention. Thanks to professional heat treatment, hardness reaches 58-61 HRC, guaranteeing prolonged sharpness and dependable daily performance.

Clip-Point profile blade, satin finish

Equipped with a Clip-Point blade profile, the blade measures 190 mm in length and 4 mm in thickness. A smooth cutting edge is refined through a concave grind, optimizing the geometry for exceptional cutting performance while retaining solid durability for demanding tasks. A satin finish provides the blade with a semi-matte appearance and enhanced resistance to scratches.

Contoured G10 laminate handle, spring clip

The handle of the knife is constructed from highly durable G10 laminate, engineered from multiple layers of glass fiber impregnated with epoxy resin, providing outstanding resistance to impact, moisture, and maintaining a lightweight profile. Robustness is further ensured by polished bolsters and a 7075 aluminum frame, offering additional strength to the handle. Ergonomically shaped finger grooves offer enhanced grip security and precise control, even in wet or dirty conditions.

Equipped with a spring clip for easy attachment, the knife can be conveniently secured to a pocket or belt. The clip’s reversible configuration guarantees accessibility for both right- and left-handed operators.

Tri-Ad lock, thumb disc

User safety is guaranteed by the renowned Tri-Ad Lock, recognized as one of the most robust and dependable locking mechanisms available for folding knives. The construction features a stop pin designed to absorb the forces exerted on the blade, thereby channeling them into the handle and minimizing wear on the locking parts. Owing to its self-adjusting nature, this mechanism preserves long-term reliability and performance.

A thumb disc positioned on the blade facilitates easy two-handed opening and enables swift blade deployment by catching the knife on the pocket edge.

CPM S35VN feature
CPM S35VN
CPM S35VN is a stainless powder steel developed by Crucible Industries in collaboration with Chris Reeve, used in premium knives. It is an evolution of the popular S30V steel, offering a better balance between wear resistance, stainlessness, and ease of machining. Carbon (approx. 1.4%) is responsible for high hardness, while chromium (approx. 14%) gives the steel very good corrosion resistance, and vanadium (approx. 3%) extends edge life and improves cutting aggression. After hardening, it reaches 58-61 HRC, combining edge durability with fracture resistance. The steel retains its sharpness for a long time and is easy to sharpen, commonly used in EDC, outdoor, tactical, and collector's knives.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Great knife! Expensive but worth the money. In person, when you hold it in your hand, it makes an even bigger impression. It's something between a knife and a machete. Incredibly sharp, I even tested shaving my own calf! Quite heavy, but handy despite its size. Very, very solidly made, as if custom-ordered. It's almost a shame to use it, it's too beautiful :) For now, I'm practicing opening it with one hand, which isn't easy with this size knife. The automatic opening as you pull it from your pocket is also impressive.

Using the Espada XL brings a lot of joy, and the craftsmanship and attention to detail are stunning, making you want to carry it with you every day and take it out as often as possible. I've long wondered if owning such a marvel makes sense, and finally realized that it's made from such good materials and has so much power that you can do practically anything with it. For me, it's mainly a folding kitchen knife, which I use only for food outdoors or at friends' places. In my opinion, it's worth it!
