Cold Steel SR1 Tanto S35VN Folding Knife

A folding knife, designed for everyday carry (EDC), created as a project inspired by the legendary Survival Rescue Knife (SRK). The model was developed by American knifemaker Andrew Demko. It features a Tanto blade made of CPM S35VN powder-coated steel, which offers excellent corrosion resistance, and a satin finish that gives the blade an elegant look. The handle, in shades of green, is made of G10 laminate with a non-slip texture that ensures a secure grip. The knife opens using a double-sided thumb stud, and the robust Tri-Ad Lock ensures safe and stable operation.

High-quality CPM S35VN powder steel

The blade is made of CPM S35VN powder steel, which offers excellent corrosion resistance and retains its sharpness for a long time. After proper heat treatment, this steel achieves a hardness of 58–61 HRC, ensuring that the cutting edge remains sharp for a long time and that the knife performs reliably in everyday use.

Tanto blade with a satin finish

The blade, with a Tanto profile, is 101 mm long and 5 mm thick. The smooth cutting edge has been finished with a high flat grind. The blade is finished with a semi-matte satin coating, which reduces the visibility of fine scratches and minimizes glare. The blade is designed to provide excellent piercing capabilities while maintaining high strength, allowing for reliable and more intensive use of the knife.

Ergonomically shaped G10 handle, reversible clip

The handle is made of G10 laminate, which consists of layers of fiberglass bonded with epoxy resin. This material is characterized by high strength, moisture resistance, and light weight. The non-slip, ergonomic profile features a short, single-sided cross guard that prevents the hand from sliding onto the blade. The back of the handle features jimping, which improves control during precise tasks.

The knife is also equipped with a steel tip-up clip that can be repositioned to either side of the handle, making it comfortable for both right- and left-handed users.

Strong Tri-Ad Lock, double-sided stud

The knife features the Tri-Ad Lock, an improved version of the Back-Lock system designed to offer greater resistance to dynamic loads. Thanks to the use of a stop pin, which absorbs the forces acting on the blade and distributes them throughout the handle structure, this mechanism is considered one of the most durable used in folding knives. Additionally, the lock automatically adjusts over time, maintaining stable operation, and effectively prevents the knife from accidentally opening when it is closed.

The knife is opened using a thumb stud located on both sides of the blade, allowing for comfortable deployment by both right- and left-handed users.

Cold Steel is a respected American brand of knives, machetes, and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which provides high durability and wear resistance. Cold Steel patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand works with respected knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko, whose passion and experience contribute to the high quality of the products.

CPM S35VN feature
CPM S35VN
CPM S35VN is a stainless powder steel developed by Crucible Industries in collaboration with Chris Reeve, used in premium knives. It is an evolution of the popular S30V steel, offering a better balance between wear resistance, stainlessness, and ease of machining. Carbon (approx. 1.4%) is responsible for high hardness, while chromium (approx. 14%) gives the steel very good corrosion resistance, and vanadium (approx. 3%) extends edge life and improves cutting aggression. After hardening, it reaches 58-61 HRC, combining edge durability with fracture resistance. The steel retains its sharpness for a long time and is easy to sharpen, commonly used in EDC, outdoor, tactical, and collector's knives.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Very good workmanship, a reliable Cold Steel brand, efficiently working lock and sharpening. Pleasure and ease of use, user satisfaction. I highly recommend it.

I finally got my hands on the knife I've been wanting for a long time. The downside is the price, but I think everyone already sees that. On the other hand, the quality, durability, and overall feel of the knife somewhat make up for this downside. The lock used by Cold Steel (tri lock something) gives a sense of security when you hold it in your hand, there is no involuntary fear as with thin liner locks (Luzon!). The steel is good and the knife arrived acceptably sharp. I have a feeling this knife will accompany me for a long time.

Exactly what I wanted, strong construction, good quality materials, very comfortable handle. The G10 is very rough but will probably wear off a bit during use, the clip holds very tightly (too tightly).

Everything is great—the handle, the blade, even the length and the fairly good weight for such a chopper. Before purchasing, you just need to ask yourself if you need 5mm thickness in a folding knife. It will shatter more than one board into chips, but it’s not a knife even for emergency tomato slicing. You can do it, but only halfway ;)

    Massive above all, great mechanically

Very good, sturdy knife, the raw shapes give it character. It opens smoothly and lightly, folding it with one hand is not a problem. I recommend this product.

If you want a sturdy folder, it's simple, get a Recon 1, but if even that seems too weak, not Heavy Duty enough... then the SR1 comes to the rescue, this knife is an indestructible folding pry bar, and one that cuts.
