Helikon-Tex M65 Covert Jacket - Ash Grey

Premium military jacket in Ash Grey, manufactured by Polish brand Helikon-Tex. Inspired by the iconic M65 design, a staple of the US Army since the Vietnam era. Constructed from robust DuraCanvas fabric, the jacket provides protection against light rain and wind, making it ideal for autumn and winter use. Nylon Versastrech panels with added elastane are integrated above the chest pockets and on the elbows, offering enhanced durability and flexibility. The hood is crafted from the same advanced material.

Constructed from robust DuraCanvas fabric, the jacket combines 65% polyester, 33% cotton, and 2% elastane for enhanced performance. The material boasts exceptional resistance to abrasion and mechanical wear, while delivering effective shielding from light rain and wind. Incorporation of elastane further improves comfort in use. Additional warmth and structure are provided by a lining composed of 65% polyester and 35% cotton.

Practical and spacious pockets

The jacket features a total of 11 functional pockets, offering versatile storage options:

  • two external chest pockets designed for easy access to essential gear, secured with buttoned flaps
  • two exterior hip pockets, suitable for use as drop bags, also fastened with buttoned flaps
  • two interior magazine pockets with zip closures for secure magazine transport
  • a zippered inside pocket located on the left chest beneath the windproof flap
  • a zippered pocket on the left forearm for storing small items
  • two outer back pockets featuring Velcro closures
  • a dedicated detachable inner pocket that can be converted into a waist pack with a zipper closure

    This jacket pleasantly surprised me. I already have the Helikon M-65, but I was looking for something more stylish for the city and work. The jacket has a lining, so it's not as light as I expected, which means it probably won't be suitable for hot weather. It has a lot of pockets—even more than I need, but I consider that a plus. It's quite fitted, although there is no drawstring at the waist. The material looks solid, similar to the fabric of the Pilgrim model. The jacket looks good, is comfortable to wear, and costs less than other jackets of this type, so it's really a worthwhile purchase. I'm 180 cm tall and weigh 74 kg, and I chose size M. You can wear it over several layers, but it fits well even over just a shirt.

    For better understanding: I am 1.76 m tall, weigh 87 kg, and have a chest circumference of 112 cm. I needed a jacket for transitional weather. I chose size M (EU), because previously, with the Woodsman Shirt from Helikon-Tex in size L (EU), I had to shorten the sleeves by 3 cm, but here in M, that's not the case. A regular t-shirt under the jacket is no problem. However, when I put on a flannel shirt, the sleeves are a bit tight (maybe because the jacket is new). When I also added a fleece vest over the shirt, I could fasten the jacket, but I felt definite pressure. The large number of pockets is a definite advantage, but in my opinion, the front lower pockets could be about 2 cm deeper. I have to wait until autumn to really find out if this was the right jacket choice.

    The jacket works great on windy days and offers all the features that were promised. However, I consider the lack of buttons for liners compared to the standard M65 a significant drawback. The storage for the hood is definitely smaller than in the classic model, so putting the hood in may take more time, but aside from that, the jacket is light and very comfortable. The additional pockets are a practical solution and can easily replace a small bag.

    The main material of the jacket is of poor quality. After just four washes, despite following the instructions, visible abrasions appear, especially at the seams or where the seams are on the inside. If you plan to wear this jacket in the city, its appearance will quickly disappoint you. On the other hand, the elastic hood still looks like new.

    Great jacket. Light, pleasant material, even directly on a T-shirt, doesn’t stick to the skin. After reading the reviews, I was afraid I ordered too big, but it turned out to be perfect. 186 cm tall, about 80 kg, size L. Sleeve length is perfect. Excellent hood – stretchy, not too big, not too small. Fits perfectly on a bare head or a patrol cap. As someone mentioned earlier, the lack of a drawstring at the waist is a drawback. The buttons are inconvenient to open and close, but I won’t use them. The side pockets are much more comfortable than a standard M65, they are closer to the front and don’t twist your wrists. You can put your hands in and it’s comfortable (not as someone previously wrote). The “back” pockets – a great feature. They are right behind the side pockets, easy to access. Perfect for keys or a pocket knife, right under your hand and not in the way. The jacket is almost perfect for autumn and spring. I consider this a good purchase.
