The History of the Savotta Brand
Savotta was founded in 1955 by Allan and Marjatta Halme in Pylkönmäki, Finland, initially under the name Pylkönmäen Nahkatyö. In its early years, it focused on producing gloves, bags, and backpacks intended for forestry workers.
In the 1960s, the brand changed its name to Savotta Retkeilyväline, moved to Karstula, and significantly expanded its assortment. The offer included tents and large backpacks equipped with external frames. In the same period, Savotta began producing equipment for the Finnish armed forces, which started a long-term collaboration with the military and solidified the company's position as a producer of reliable tactical equipment.
In the 1970s, the company adopted its current name, Finn-Savotta Oy. For the following decades, it consistently developed its offer by designing and producing durable backpacks, tents, and accessories for tourism, the military, and uniformed services – always emphasizing quality, durability, and practical application in demanding conditions.

Savotta Hatka 12 l Backpack
The Savotta Hatka is a compact tactical backpack with a capacity of 12 liters. Its name derives from the Finnish expression “ottaa hatkat,” which means “to flee” or “to quickly say goodbye.” This perfectly reflects the backpack's purpose — quickly packing essential gear and setting off immediately.
This model was designed as a modular "escape" backpack that can be easily attached to a larger backpack to increase gear space. Of course, it also works great as a standalone city backpack for everyday use.
On the outside of the backpack, there are four rows of PALS webbing, allowing for the attachment of pouches, bungee cords, or buckles for quick attachment and detachment of this model from a larger backpack. At the bottom of the backpack, there are also four loops for attaching elastic cords, facilitating the transport of additional gear under the backpack.
Inside this model of the backpack, there are compartments for organizing small items and a D-ring for attaching keys, a headlamp, or other small equipment. Additionally, the model is equipped with an open pocket, which can serve, for example, as a place for a hydration bladder.
Savotta Kahakka 25 l Backpack
The next model is the Savotta Kahakka, a backpack designed with the needs of the military and demanding outdoor users in mind. Its name, kahakka, means “skirmish” or “small battle” in Finnish, which perfectly reflects its tactical nature.
The Kahakka is made of exceptionally durable Cordura with a weight of 1000D and 500D. The backpack features high resistance to mechanical damage – its durability has been confirmed, among others, through a test involving a vehicle driving over it.
The Savotta Kahakka model is equipped with a spacious main compartment with a wide flap fastened with two buckles, providing quick access to the interior. Inside, there is a pocket for a hydration bladder with an opening for the tube, and on the sides, there are two large pockets for bottles or other accessories. At the front, there is a flat zippered pocket, and at the back – a removable foam insert that stiffens the backpack and can serve as a seat in the field.
The numerous PALS system straps allow for the mounting of additional gear, and compression straps allow for volume adjustment or attachment of larger luggage. The Velcro on the flap enables attachment of a patch or emblem. The backpack has ergonomically adjustable shoulder straps that ensure comfort and fit, and the chest and waist straps support stabilization and weight distribution. A practical carrying handle makes it easier to transport the backpack.
Savotta Jaakari M 30 l Backpack
One of the popular Savotta backpacks is the Jääkäri with a capacity of 30 liters. This is an improved version of the Light Border Patrol backpack, originally designed for the Finnish Border Guard. The slim construction, profiled shoulder straps, and padded hip belt make the backpack great for longer marches with heavier gear.
This backpack is equipped with mounting straps in the PALS standard, allowing for easy attachment of additional pockets and gear. An internal plastic stiffened insert ensures the appropriate stiffness of the structure, while compression straps allow for tightening the load into a compact, stable form.
The Jääkäri features a spacious main compartment closed by a drawstring collar and a lid with a zipper pocket. The side zipper closure enables quick access to the contents without opening from the top. Two mesh side pockets make it easy to carry small equipment or water bottles. Inside, there is a compartment for a hydration system with two ports, allowing for the routing of tubes, cables, or antennas outside the backpack.
Savotta Kantamus 40 l Backpack
The last model presented is the very spacious Savotta Kantamus 40 l, which can easily hold a tent, spare clothes, food, and water for several days. Its main compartment has a capacity of 40 liters, and the pocket in the flap adds another 8 liters. Numerous mounting points on the outside allow the backpack to be easily adapted to individual needs, for example, additional pockets can be attached to it.
Inside the backpack, there is a special pocket for a hydration bladder with an outlet for the hydration tube. There are two large pockets on the sides. At the front of the backpack, there is a spacious flat zippered pocket. At the back, there is a removable foam insert that further stiffens the structure. When removed, it can serve as a pad for sitting or insulation during a rest in the field.
Ergonomically shaped and adjustable shoulder straps allow the backpack to fit comfortably to the silhouette, increasing comfort during hikes. The detachable chest strap and softly padded hip belt stabilize the backpack well, ensuring comfort even during longer wear.
