Cold Steel 4-Max Scout AUS-10A Folding Knife - FDE

Everyday carry (EDC) folding knife crafted by American knifemaker Andrew Demko. The blade features a black coating and is forged from Japanese stainless steel AUS-10A, known for its outstanding corrosion resistance. The FDE (Flat Dark Earth) colored handle, made from Griv-Ex composite, offers a secure, non-slip hold. A double-sided thumb stud enables smooth opening, while the Tri-Ad Lock mechanism firmly locks the blade in place during use.

Japanese stainless steel AUS-10A

Forged from Japanese stainless steel AUS-10A, the blade boasts impressive durability, outstanding corrosion resistance, and high wear resistance. When subjected to the hardening process, the blade achieves a hardness rating of 58-61 HRC.

Drop-Point profile blade, black coating

Featuring a Drop-Point blade profile, the knife offers a 101 mm blade length and a robust 4.8 mm thickness. A high flat grind produces a refined, smooth cutting edge. Finished with a black coating, the blade minimizes unwanted reflections. This blade architecture ensures superior cutting performance while preserving optimal durability, making the knife well-suited for demanding tasks.

Ergonomic Griv-Ex composite grip, steel clip

A stainless steel framework forms the foundation of the grip, to which robust Griv-Ex composite scales and a back spacer are mounted. An anti-slip texture delivers reliable hold, even in wet or grimy conditions, while pronounced finger grooves enhance control during use. The generously sized, ergonomic profile guarantees comfortable operation, whether barehanded or while wearing gloves. An integrated opening at the end of the handle allows for easy safety cord threading.

A steel tip-up clip is included, designed for ambidextrous use, enabling placement on either side of the handle to accommodate both right and left-handed individuals.

Tri-Ad Lock, double-sided stud

When opened, the blade is locked in place by the Tri-Ad Lock system, an enhanced evolution of the traditional Back Lock, recognized as one of the toughest locking mechanisms for folding knives. The construction utilizes a stop pin designed to absorb the impact forces exerted on the blade, channeling them into the handle's frame to significantly reduce mechanism wear. The system is engineered to automatically adjust for normal wear over time, preserving the integrity of the lock. A double-sided thumb stud on the blade allows for rapid one-handed deployment.

AUS-10 feature
AUS-10
AUS-10 is a high-quality stainless steel produced by the Japanese company Aichi Steel, considered one of the best in the AUS steel series, used mainly in mid-range and high-end utility knives, produced mainly in Japan and Taiwan. The carbon content (0.95-1.1%) ensures high hardness, while chromium (13-14.5%) guarantees very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. The steel also contains manganese (up to 1%), silicon (up to 1%), phosphorus (up to 0.025%), and sulfur (up to 0.025%), which affect hardenability, impact strength, elasticity, and machinability, improving structural stability and maintaining mechanical properties. After hardening, the steel achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, offering an excellent balance between strength, edge retention, and ease of sharpening. It is comparable to 440C steel, differing in carbon content and the addition of vanadium, which improves structural homogeneity and increases abrasion resistance.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.
