Initially, he assumed that it would take him only a month to create a prototype of the new tool. Unfortunately, the reality turned out to be more difficult and it took him another three years to construct a prototype and submit a patent application. After obtaining a patent and developing a prototype, Tim began trying to sell his design. However, the companies he approached were not interested in his product. He received rejections for the next three and a half years until he teamed up with his university friend, Steve Berliner. After years of intensive work and testing, they managed to introduce their first product under the Leatherman brand to the market. It was a pocket multitool called Leatherman PST (Pocket Survival Tool) that was produced for almost 20 years.
In the following years, the popularity of the Leatherman brand increased significantly. This was due not only to the very good quality of the products, but also to the long, 25-year warranty.
